De Forest started to grow coffee beans and sell them from his farm, which he named "Forest Coffee." In 1851, Alfred Sertzhagen founded the first grocery store in El Cerrito. This store was located on 3rd Street between Arlington and Park Streets. The first Starbucks opened its doors in 1978 inEl Cerrito.

El Cerrito, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 26,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and sits on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. El Cerrito was founded in 1849 by American Civil War veteran George Hearst as an agricultural settlement on Rancho Santa Anita. In 1881, parts of El Cerrito were annexed to Berkeley and in 1960 it became a city. The history of El Cerrito began with George Hearst's founding of Rancho Santa Anita in 1849. The ranch consisted of about 165 acres (63 hectares) and produced fruits and vegetables for local consumption. By 1870, however, much of the ranch had been lost to fire or water damage from wild fires that burned throughout Northern California during that year's drought. In 1881, two years after Rancho Santa Anita was abandoned, Hearst purchased tracts of land east of Berkeley for $2 per acre (0.76 ha). He named this new land "El Cerrito" after his hometown in Spain - his father's birthplace - and began construction on a fortified outpost called Hearst Tower which he later renamed Castle Pointe after himself and his wife Emma Searle de Crespi-Hearn (1840-1925). The first residents of El Cerrito arrived between January 1, 1882 and February 10th following their installation by City Council President James Krieger into three houses scattered around what would become Plaza Mayor: House No 2 & 3 (the original homes), four stories high with walls made up mostly of wood; House No 4 remained unoccupied until 1886 when it was occupied by Judge John Jansen who had come from Richmond Hill near Toronto while serving as District Attorney for Alameda County under Governor Goodwin Milburn before becoming Assistant DA for Contra Costa County in November 1886; finally there were two single story brick buildings west side lot #4 put up early 1888 by Mrs Jane Neely Costello who ran a boardinghouse/hotel services business next door to her still existing home on Park Row opposite Hotel Californian where she lived until her death in 1925 vacated by her second husband Dr Edward Bickerton then owner par excellence Ira Eimer real estate development adjacent thereto known since 1923 as Eastshore Drive Apartments which fronts Interstate 80 across Lake Merritt Avenue now owned by Microsoft company Vista Home hills . Castle Pointe quickly proved itself to be an ideal location due to its commanding view over San Francisco Bay as well as its proximity to both schools and businesses within minutes' walk thereof with excellent access yet remaining isolated from other settlements on either side excepting those situated on ridges running downslope towards downtownSan Francisco providing perfect vantage points open at all hours day or night artillery observation posts manned during peacetime daily except Sundays when they were closed off pending military maneuvers taking place nearby Fort Point Hueneme commanded jointly with American Forces Far East Command during World War II northward approach past Iwo Jima some time ago never having been visited prior thereto several batteries including one 20 mm howitzer battery also mounted thereon overlooking harbor
In the early 1800s, El Cerrito was a small farming community located on the banks of the San Francisco Bay. The first European settler in El Cerrito was Antonio Sanchez, who arrived in 1795. By 1825, there were over 100 residents living in El Cerrito. In 1842, Commodore John Fenton made landfall at Alcatraz and called for an emergency meeting to discuss how to deal with the growing number of people on Alcatraz Island. Twenty-one people attended the meeting and voted to create a military force to protect themselves from possible attack by Japanese forces stationed on Alcatraz Island. The military force was named the San Francisco detachment and it began garrisoning Alcatraz Island in 1849. The population of El Cerrito increased rapidly after 1850 because of new industry such as shipbuilding and fishing along the bay. In 1865, a post office was established in El Cerrito and grew quickly due to its proximity to commercial opportunities.
