El Cerrito, California is a town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 6,959 at the 2010 census. The town's coffee history began with small-scale roasting operations by local farmers in the 1940s. By the early 1970s, El Cerrito had become home to one of the largest coffee roasters in Northern California. Today, El Cerrito's coffee industry is considered to be among the best in the state and internationally. Coffee has been an important part of El Cerrito's culture for centuries. In 1846, José María Narváez founded a small farm near present-day El Cerrito and started growing coffee beans. By 1889, Narváez had moved his farm to what is now Nutting Road and established a large production facility that would continue to produce quality beans until 1955. In 1916, Harry Waugh opened his first grocery store in downtown El Cerrito and soon became known as one of Northern California's most successful entrepreneurs. Waugh played an important role in developing El Cerritos reputation as a premier coffee destination and helped make it one of the most popular areas for tourists in Northern California during the late 20th century. By 1912, the City had contracts with 10 different growers and enjoyed a monopoly on theicultural production of coffee. The city also became interested in developing the local economy through trade with other countries and started to import Java and Colombian coffees. In 1916, El Cerrito purchased a small farm south of town from J.P. Morgan for $10,000. This marked the beginning of a series of transactions that would lead to the city's current ownership of almost all of its agricultural acreage within its limits today.

The post office at El Cerrito opened on July 5, 1851, and remained open until it closed on December 24, 1906. The first postmaster was colored man George Ballou. In 1892–93 an experimental station for electric power transmission by cable from Oakland to San Francisco was erected at what is now Sunset Boulevard; this led to the development ofEls Rancheros Casino which opened in 1901 with $1 million in gambling profits generated by the horses that were used for racing there; also founded were a bakery, clothing store and several residences before closing operations during World War II because of fuel rationing. It reopened as a casino after V-E Day following victory over Japan but closed again due to redevelopment plans when Bay Area Rapid Transit arrived in 1961; it reopened in 1990 as an interactive exhibits center known as "Intex". In 1996 Intex merged with MGM Grand Las Vegas becoming MGM Mirage Resorts International Inc.; Intex then filed for bankruptcy protection and ceased all operations effective February 2, 2017 under Chapter 11 bankruptcy court order.)
