El Cerrito, California is a coastal town located on the San Francisco Peninsula in Northern California. It has been a center of maritime trade for centuries and its history reflects that. The first El Cerrito Marina was built in 1868 and served as a commercial port on the mouth of the tidal creek called Tiburon Creek. In 1906, when El Cerrito became part of San Francisco, the marina was moved to Commonwealth Avenue and renamed Regency Marina. In 1968, Regency Marina merged with North BayMarina to form North BayMarine-Regency County Marina. Today, North BayMarine-Regency County Marine Services operates Regency Marina which includes a full range of boating activities including fishing, fishing gear rentals, sailing and windsurfing lessons, swimming and sunbathing. The City of El Cerrito purchased land at Tiburon Creek in 1886 for $5 per acre from businessman John Dyer who had developed Tiburon Landing near the original marina site. The city began planning an east-west waterfront boulevard which would include dockside retail shops and a public library along with new homes for Feeney & Son shipbuilders (later bought by General Dynamics). The first phase of development was completed in 1889 with an initial population of 100 people living in brick buildings on what is now First Street between Hill and Daly Streets. Phase two saw construction begin on what is now Second Street between Park Boulevard and Market streets but only ended up being used as office space until 1917 when it was converted into home equity financing halls known as the Bank Stairs housing project which still stands today at 925 Market Street across from Union Square In 1911 Mayor James Fenton created Coastal Commission which designed plans for harbor Improvements district including adding berths for 12 vessels maxima out to Long Beach Harbor allowing ships moored there to be unloaded while under way without stopping at El Cerrito Municipal Pier where goods were unloaded onto ferries bound for Southern California or other ports. By 1916 all berths within district were given permits allowing Simpson’s Wharf (later renamed Embarcadero) to be built adjacent to Regency Marina closest to downtown San Francisco providing more space for storage during high winds conditions. Phase Three saw additions such as a wharf next door (now known as Pier 14), slipways above water level (/ Slipway A) making it possible for larger vessels not able to fit inside Regency Marina proper but able to berth elsewhere outside walled enclosure creating False Creek Basin - this area includes areas just south of Interstate 280 off Highway 1B between Guadalupe Road/Fremont Boulevard past SR 168/SR 680 northbound access road then eastbound access road before terminating at I-280 exit ramp) whileFalse Creek Basin remained largely undeveloped subsequent phases have involved expansion or renovation within existing boundaries bringing total number of berths within district currently over 20 boats / slips maximum size allowed currently sorry no photo gallery available

The first European to see El Cerrito was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 17, 1769 during his overland journey from Monterey to Golden Gate Bridge. He named it Rancho San Antonio del Norte after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had earlier surrendered Mexico City to Spanish forces in 1821. Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1776 by Franciscan friars as a monastery and parish church for the local Miwok people. A smallpox pandemic killed most of the Mission's residents in 1836 and relocation of the main building began soon after; construction was completed in 1840 but not used until 1851 due to lack of water supplies. In 1865, El Cerrito became part of the newly formed Contra Costa County when it was created from parts of Alameda, Marin and Contra Costa Counties. At that time its population numbered only 581 individuals (of whom 443 lived on land owned by the county). Growth continued rapidly through annexation by other counties throughout this period; by 1940 there were 10 municipalities comprising Contra Costa County with an estimated population of more than 1 million people. After years of planning and debate, voters passed Measure T which authorized development within Unincorporated Areas (UAs) without city or township status and called for a count of all UAs under one roof so that they could be analyzed for housing needs and potential urban growth opportunities The largest UA included El Cerrito which had an initial population size exceeding 2,000 individuals before declining over time due to lack of available land . However with recent annexations by Hayward and Richmond counties as well as increases in suburban populations near cities such as Walnut Creek, Hercules and Pleasanton there has been renewed interest in developing these areas into single-family suburbs By 2000 there were almost 4,000 people living inside Municipal boundaries within UC Berkeley’s “Alta Plaza” UA alone accounting for about half (1,500) Of UC Berkeley’s total undergraduate student body .
