The first Europeans to visit El Cerrito were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on July 7, 1542. Spanish missionaries established a Mission San José de la Union in 1777 and grazing land around present-day El Cerrito became part of the mission's holdings. The Presidio of Monterey was founded by Captain Alvaro Leguizamo on May 12, 1821 as part of the Mexican War of Independence. On November 8, 1846, American troops led by Colonel James KILKENNY attacked the presidio and destroyed much of it; all but three days' worth of its buildings remain standing today. On February 17, 1868 Don Empresario Crespo sold title to Rancho El Cerrito to Hiram Johnson for $1 million (equivalent to $105 million in 2009). In 1914 construction began on what would become Caltrain's first station at Market Street and Nimitz Boulevard. The tracks were completed in 1915 and service began that year; passenger rail had been available only from Berkeley or Hawthorne since 1887. The City Council purchased the right-of-way from Southern Pacific Railroad in 1922; it served as an express train depot until 1959 when Amtrak took over operations.
