The ship was used as a trading vessel between San Francisco and Mexico. It was then that Commodore John Sloat gave the order for the creation of an American navy. The USS Constitution sailed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire on October 16, 1789 and arrived in Monterey Bay on November 2nd. The USS Enterprise also came to Monterey Bay but never served in battle. In 1846, Commodore John Denny founded the town of El Cerrito which became one of America’s most important naval ports. The Navy established Camp Nelson in 1861 as a training ground for future marines. Throughout its history, the Navy have made El Cerrito their home and have left lasting imprint on this community.
