The name El Cerrito may derive from Spanish "el cerro" meaning "mountain". The first European settlement in what is now Contra Costa County was founded by three emigrants from Spain on November 8, 1846: Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla, José Joaquín Mora y Salinas and Felipe Calderón Romero. They named their new town after Mount Diablo—the most northerly peak of the Sierra Nevada range—but it wasn't until 1853 that they realized they had created an elk-free area. A year later, on October 10th of 1854, members of the Russian fur traders Vitus Bering and Aleksandr Baranov discovered gold along what's now Highway 101 near El Cerrito Creek. Within months of finding this golden treasure, many other pioneers had followed suit including George Cohan who built a small cabin on his property at 12800 block of Alma Street during 1855–56. By 1860 over 100 businesses were operating in El Cerrito with a population of around 1000 residents El Cerrito began its growth as an agricultural center with large numbers of fruit trees and vegetables being grown for export. Grain production also increased due to water access provided by two major rivers which crossed through El Cerrito: Coweta Creek (now part of Walnut Creek) flowing into San Francisco Bay then turned east past El Cerrio before emptying into Sonoma River just south of Contra Costa County line The soil here is good for growing crops but there are few natural resources so much attention has been paid to bringing in industry such as manufacturing or light manufacturing that would require special equipment or land not found here such as steelmaking or glassmaking which have taken hold elsewhere in Silicon Valley In 1907 when San Francisco’s water system went broke leaving 400 people without drinking water for two weeks, local entrepreneurs got together under one roof to come up with an answer – developing what became known as “The Waterfront Company” which supplied potable water to every home within walking distance from downtownSan Francisco

After learning about it from his aide-de-camp Major John Daly (1813–92), Commodore John Doolittle flew over strikes against Japanese shipping off Catalina Island on October 25th and November 1st 1944 carrying orders from Admiral Ernest Jillingham that no damage be done to avoid any potential conflict breaking out between Japan and America over such actions by the United States Marines A post office called "Cerritos" was established at this location on December 12th, 1850; it lasted until 1875 when it was moved to Oakland One hundred eighty years later, on February 15th 2019 El Cerrito celebrated its centennial with events including lectures/presentations on local history from various sources as well as refreshments for residents .
