El Monte, California is a city in the San Bernardino County of Southern California. The population was 117,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name El Monte comes from Spanish meaning "the hill" and refers to an old Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, which stood on what is now downtown El Monte. A post office called El Monte opened in 1881, and remained in operation until 1912. The first inhabitants of what is now El Monte were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day downtown; they built their villages along streams that run through the area today. From 1836 to 1852, traders and missionaries traveling through this region named after saints found here – St. Augustine of Cuba (1836), St. John Paul II (1842), St. Bernard (1856), and finally Our Lady of Guadalupe (1872) – helped spread Christianity to these areas as well as providing goods such as food, clothing, tools andamechanisms for irrigation systems across much of southern California during the mid-19th century gold Rush era." During World War II many residents worked on military production sites located nearby including Monterrey Army Ammunition Plant No 1 and Monterrey Naval Air Station No 2 which are still operational today but closed to the public since 1973 because of concerns over unexploded munitions left over from World War II years ago

The first USAF unit to fight in World War II was the 1st Fighter Squadron, which was activated at Tuskegee AAF on April 17, 1942. The squadron's initial mission was to provide cover for allied bombers during bombing raids over Nazi Germany. On July 20, 1944, 1st FS became the first USAF unit to shoot down an enemy aircraft in combat when it downed a Japanese Zero fighter over Okinawa. In 1945, after the war ended and Japan surrendered, 1st FS continued operations against Japan as part of The United States Atomic Energy Commission's Operation Crossroads campaign. It is also known for providing support to Allied forces in Korea during the Korean War by flying nuclear-powered bombers into enemy territory to drop munitions on targets inside North Korea
El Monte, California is a city located in the San Bernardino County of southern California. The population was 452,854 at the 2010 census. The name El Monte means "The Hill" in Spanish and refers to a hill that once stood near present-day downtown El Monte. In 1872, during the Gold Rush period, prospectors discovered gold on what is now known as Elmira Street. This led to the town's name change from Richland to El Monte and its official incorporation as a city on March 14, 1892. Today, El Monte is known for its agricultural production; it is one of the largest producers of grapes in California. It has also been home to several professional football teams over the years: The Los Angeles Rams (1947-1978), The Oakland Raiders (1979-1989), and The Chargers (1990-1998). Additionally, there are several restaurants and bars located throughout downtown El Monte with an extensive nightlife scene.
