Coffee beans were brought overland from Mexico and sourced from local farmers. The first commercial espresso machine was built in El Monte by Emilio Castiglione in 1916. The city's first grocery store, founded in 1919, sold Italian-made espresso machines to customers. In 1951, Donatella Lombardi opened her own small cafe on 2nd Street called Donatella's which served up a wide variety of pastries including pizzas, pastries and sandwiches made with house-made doughnuts or croissants). In 1957, Angelo Petrini opened his own roastery/café called Donatella Petrini & Sons which became one of the most popular cafes throughout the city until it closed its doors at the end of 2016.

El Monte, California is a city and county seat in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 41,471 at the 2010 census. It is located on the El Monte Fault about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The first European to visit what is now El Monte was Juan Bautista de Anza on March 26, 1769. He named it Villa Nueva de los Angeles del Norte after his patron saint, the Virgin Mary. Rancho El Monte was given to Francisco Pico in 1810 by Ramon Perea and Teofilo Palomares as part of Mexican land grants given to Anglo-Americans during the Mexican-American War. The name "El Monte" originated with Captain Don Fernando Peralta who explored this area in 1826 while stationed at Mission Santa Ana del Buen Retiro near modern-day Pasadena. In 1882, Híjar Indians led by Chief Manuel Micheltorena attacked settlers along Amador River calling for assistance from their chiefs over a dispute over grazing rights onaha (a grassland lying between foothills and mountains). A force of Methodist missionaries arrived and fought off the Indian attackers before traveling back home with goods they had collected including beads, clothing and horses. What became known as "Micheltorena's Massacre" resulted in more than 20 casualties among both settler groups andhooves were used to drive away all but six of the Híjar warriors who retreated into the mountains where they continued their resistance until forced out by federal troops under General José Joaquín Mosqueda y Castro in 1886.
