The El Monte Coast Guard Museum is dedicated to the history and legacy of the Coast Guard in El Monte. The museum has several exhibits on topics including the history of the Coast Guard, maritime law enforcement, and more. One of the most interesting exhibits is a collection of Coast Guards uniforms and equipment dating back to 1903. This exhibit also features artifacts from various missions accomplished by the Coast Guard in El Monte. Another interesting exhibit at the museum is an old truck used by Customs and Border Protection. This truck was originally purchased by the El Monte Police Department in 1984 and has been donated to CBP by local officials. The truck contains many tools and equipment used by CBP agents on their patrols across California. The Coast Guard has been in El Monte, California since 1915. In 1915, the first Coast Guard station was built on what is now Harbor Boulevard. The Station served as a port of entry and Customs and Excise office for the town of El Monte. In 1933, the Coast Guard established its own barracks in the old schoolhouse on North High Street in El Monte. It became home to the USCG El Monte Detachment until 1942 when it was transferred to San Diego. In 1945, the U.S. Congress designated El Monte as a Naval Air Station and from 1951 to 1959, it also served as an Army Air Base. On October 1st 1957, Coast Guard District 3 was created subordinate to Headquarters Pacific Fleet with jurisdiction over all waters between Panama City and Long Beach (the southern border of Los Angeles County). On December 15th 1961 Headquarters Commander USS Makin (AR-4) assumed command at anchor off Point Loma after she had been decommissioned at sea for 5 years (she had been converted into a buoy tender). Withdrawal of Makin began on January 17th 1966 due to budget cuts which effected many agencies within HQPAC including the Coast Guard’s coastal watch program which was then headquartered at Makin. The closure of Makin ended more than 30 years of coast guard cooperation with that agency located just south of Point Loma in Downtown Los Angeles
El Monte is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 61,855 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and the second most populous city in Southern California after Pasadena. El Monte is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now El Monte were Spanish soldiers who were sent by Captain Gabriel Moraga to survey Rancho San Fernando de la Palma on December 15, 1769. A mission was founded there on January 7, 1771 by Father Francisco Xavier Reyes and named Nuestra Senora de las Esperanzas (Our Lady of Peace). In 1821, Governor Manuel Nieto transferred part of Rancho San Fernando de la Palma to Mexico as part of the Compromise of 1850 which ended the Mexican–American War. In 1847, James Phelan built a small adobe house on his property called "Phelan's House" for his business partner John Sutter. When it became known that Phelan had bought land east of downtown Los Angeles for an railroad station he wanted to name his new town El Monte but Sutter objected because it sounded like a Mexican word meaning "hollow place." So Phelan changed it to "El Monte" or "Mountains". Railroad officials chose this name for their new station because they thought people would refer to it as "the monte," rather than El Monte. The town site was patented on November 8th, 1849 by Don José Antonio Gilroy y Costilla under the name Mount Enterprise (later renamed Mount Whitney). In 1852 William Mulford bought 6 lots adjacent to Phelan's House from John Sutter for $100 each and started calling his settlement Freemont although no deed has been found documenting this purchase until today! On December 2nd 1860 Solomon Bache purchased 3 lots from Mulford for $50 each and started calling his settlement Canoga Park although no deed has been found documenting this purchase until today! These are just some examples - over time various other settlements were established throughout what is now El Monte including Pomona (1862), Glendale (1892), Claremont Heights (1910), Arcadia Hills (1920) and finally its current day moniker – Monument Valley – due to its proximity to Hoover Dam! A post office called Freemont opened in 1865; it closed in 1895 because of mail delivery problems between Mt Enterprise and Canoga Park; however, a store operated at 403 N Grand Ave from 1895-1925 before closure also due to mail delivery problems between Mt Enterprise and Claremont Heights.. The first telephone line went into service with Western Electric Corporation serving both Freemont and Canoga Park on October 31st 1912…. In 1930 Service Electric Company served all three towns with 12 telephones….. Today Monument Valley Telephone Cooperative offers long distance services through its PSTN’s providing coverage area from Pomona westward…..Today Monument Valley Telephone Cooperative remains one of Northern California’s oldest wireless providers
