El Monte is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and adjacent to Riverside County. The name "El Monte" means "high mountain." George Custer was born in this town on December 14, 1868. In 1916, movie star James Stewart played El Monte in the western movie Western Express which took place at the same time that Hollywood's First Golden Age was happening. While many people know about El Monte for its beautiful landscape or for its famous residents like James Stewart and Clark Gable, it also has a rich history that goes back to before these two names were even mentioned together! The first inhabitants of what is now El Monte were Native Americans who lived near Mission Viejo Creek when it split into two branches after being hit by an earthquake in 1769. From here they began moving westward and founded several villages including Buena Vista and Palmdale. It wasn't until 1848 when white settlers started arriving in large numbers that they started calling themselves "Los Angeles" or simply "Californians". The date February 14th 1836 account for why the name “El Mono” (the high mountain) was chosen as their new location for a post office instead of nearby Ontario because no other settlement could be reached from daybreak until evening due to snow drifts blocking roads and blizzards shutting down travelers' attempts to leave. The town site actually lay at an elevation higher than any other part of San Bernardino County so mail delivery couldn’t be provided from Sacramento or other points east. Because of this circumstance and because there was already a post office established at Ontario (now Victorville), citizens decided to change their name to “El Monte” long before it became well-known throughout Northern California!
