El Monte is a city in southern California, located in the San Gabriel Valley. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County and was founded on December 3, 1887. The city has a population of 145,369 as of 2010. The downtown area is home to the El Monte Bible Church, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The first Europeans to visit what is now El Monte were members of an expedition led by Don Pedro de Alvarado during the Mexican-American War. In 1836, Obed Sanchez built a cabin at present-day Garden Grove on land that he had bought from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $400. On July 24, 1839, Jose Maria Garza sold 8 hectares (21acre) north of Pasadena to José Antonio Mejia for $2 per acre ($24 per hectare). Although Lopez claimed title to Rancho San Fernando (partly because his father had acquired it), he did not move into rancho until after his purchase from Garza by Governor Manuel Micheltorena in April 1840. One year later on October 26th Mexicans under José Joaquin de la Luz attacked two Californios named Gonzalo Pacheco and Vicente Guerrero while they were working cattle near Monterey Bay; these assailants killed both Americans and took their livestock with them before fleeing back across Mexico never to be seen again within living memory. One hundred years later another American settler arrived in this area when George Washington Powell constructed his adobe house called "Powell's Fort" about 4 miles east of today's El Monte at what are now Ford Avenue and Beldon Road. He left behind seeds that would grow into what we know today as tomatoes and cucumbers; these early pioneers also discovered oil shale under property now known as Westwood Drive nearishop Elementary School just south of Interstate 210/State Route 120 between Research Boulevard and North University Avenue

El Monte, California is a city located in Southern California on the El Monte River. It was founded in 1882 by Antonio L. Garza and Adela C. Pico as a small town for the workers of the nearby Garza Rancho de los Estados Mexicanos railroad. The name “El Monte” means “The Mountain” and was chosen because of its location at 7,491 feet (2,295 meters) above sea level. In 1912, when parts of Los Angeles were annexed to El Monte, the city became an incorporated municipality with a population of 28 residents. In 1916 it became the county seat forLos Angeles County after being designated as such by Governor Hiram Johnson. The city is located on both sides of the El Monte River and has several points of interest including: Chavez Ravine Park on the west side and Don Pedro Creek Park on the east side where there are several waterfalls and caves that can be explored year-round. The downtown district contains numerous theaters, shops, restaurants, and public services including libraries, schools, parks and streets named after historical figures or local areas like Las Flores Avenue which runs through Downtown el Monte from south to north.
The area now known as El Monte, California was first populated by the Tongva people in the late 1800s. In 1853, Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold on what is now called County Road 10 near present-day downtown El Monte. Over the next several years, many prospectors and miners came to this area looking for gold. In 1861, Jedediah Smith discovered an extensive silver deposit at Sutter’s Mill in what is now downtown San Bernardino County. The discovery led to a huge rush of people and resources to these two sites, which caused a great deal of destruction and much economic decline. However, because of this newfound wealth, many new settlements were born along the lines of Broadway and State Street in north central El Monte. In 1873, railroad developers built a line from Los Angeles through present-day San Bernardino Valley to Redlands (now Riverside), making El Monte one of the most important railroads in Northern California. This construction helped spur growth in the region and led to increased development around town including housing developments such as Pico Rivera and Morongo Park. Additionally, small businesses began emerging throughout town with various services such as grocery stores, art galleries, restaurants and hotels being established based on demand from residents and tourists alike. During World War II (1939-1945),El Monte became an important military airbase due to its location close to major highways connecting LA with points inland from Japan via Highway 15. Many commercial buildings were constructed during this time including Camp Kilmer Army Airfield northeast of town where fighter planes were maintained while stationed in Southern CA during 1943-1945; these facilities are still extant today as part of Veterans Affairs Medical Center - El Monte Regional Hospital).
