El Monte, California is the largest city in San Diego County, and one of the most populous cities in Southern California. The city has a population of over 1 million people and covers an area of about 282 square miles. The first Europeans to arrive in El Monte were Mormon pioneers who built a small cabin on the bank of Coyote Creek in 1847. In 1849, Mexican citizens from San Francisco petitioned for annexation into Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. On February 14, 1850, El Monte was incorporated as a town under the name Coyote Creek. The first post office opened in 1851 and was called Mission Post #1 because it was located at what is now Civic Center Drive NE and First Street NW. In 1861, after California became a state, El Monte became one ofirteen towns within San Diego County. On January 6, 1870, it became an City when it seceded from San Diego County and joined with other localities to form what is now Orange County. As part of its incorporation into Orange County, El Monte paid $5 per thousand acres ($100 per acre) to become part of that county’s boundaries. In 1917–1918 there was much contention over whether or not to annex Newport Beach because its population had more than doubled since 1910 (from about 830 residents to more than 1,200). However voters approved annexation on November 3rd by a large margin; however this decision later been overturned on appeal due to Newport Beach’s high watermark population density (it had surpassed 300 residents by 1922). The Construction Boom In Los Angeles: 1907-1920 After World War I brought prosperity to Southern California through new construction projects such as Interstate 10 ( Completed 1923 ), Hollywood Boulevard ( Completed 1926 ), and the new airport near Dodson Field ( Opened 1929 ), many workers left downtown Los Angeles for better wages and prospects in southern Orange County where agricultural production increased during that decade thanks to investments by railroad magnate Henry Clay Frick in citrus farming operations Thereafter came another boom period for both technology startups such as Radio Corporation Of America (RCA), Lockheed Aircraft Company (LAC), Digital Equipment Corporation(DEC), Hewlett Packard Enterprise(HPE)and Intel among others while also many factories went out of business during this time including Alcoa Aluminum Company's Kearny Mesa Mill followed quickly by Consolidated Gas Light & Power Co.'s La Jolla plant
