El Monte is a city in southern California, United States. The population was 33,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. The city is located on the eastern side of the San Gabriel Mountains and shares borders with Riverside County to its east and Anaheim County to its west. The area that would become El Monte was first settled by Mono people in 18 Yuma Creek Indian Reservation in what is now Southern California. El Monte is a city in California, United States. The population was 91,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County. El Monte is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and is bordered by Palo Alto to the south and east, Mountain View to the north, and San Jose to the west. The first people to live in what would become El Monte were Indians who established a village near present-day downtown El Monte in 1776. Spanish missionaries came to Monterey Bay in 1821 and began baptizing Native Americans here. In 1826, Mexican General Antonio López de Mendoza founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís here with help from American traders wishing to purchase land for missions in Alta California. A year later, José Joaquín Cámpora acquired ownership of Rancho Rinconcito grant No. 7 (now part of City of Gilroy) from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $10 per acre ($160 per kilometer). In 1857, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill onshore about 12 miles northwest of present-day El Monte when prospectors dredging for gold discovered an estimated 1 million ounces (.35 troy oz) of gold hidden under thick mud at an depth of over 120 feet (39 meters). This event helped motivate Californios throughout much of Central America and Mexico to come overland through Sonoma County during this time period in search of wealth beyond their fertile valleys or coastal towns such as Loreto or Carmel Valley where agriculture had been dominant since prehistorical times. It wasn't until 1865 that water power was harnessed using an engine installed by George Hearn within 100 yards (91 meters) of old Fort Ross which soon enabled mills started Loading Dock #1 . . . loading passengers onto wagons before moving downriver towards new Missions built on various points along riverbanks opposite today's town plaza area – Atwater Landing , Fish Camp Landing etc., while millhands worked directly above deck grates keeping trucks filled with flour bags full of rice meal doughnuts freshness then carried out into town where customers disembarked aboard ship after being unloaded off barges moored near current Embarcadero!
