The marines collected 1,000 dollars from local businesses in order to purchase two gifts for military members stationed at Fort Irwin. The first gift was a golf club and the second was a set of rules for propagandizing social games with Marines stationed at other detachments around the country.
El Monte is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. El Monte is located east of downtown Los Angeles and south of Pomona. It is bordered by Hawthorne to the north, Claremont to the east, Glendale to the south, and Lancaster to the west. The first Europeans who set foot in what is now El Monte were Spanish soldiers led by Captain Francisco Pico during his 1769 expedition through present-day Southern California. After landing on December 14, 1769, they established a military post near what is now Alpine Avenue and Sierra Boulevard in present-day El Monte. A year later, on January 30th of 1770, another Spanish expedition under Lieutenant Jose de Ulloa y Puerto landed at Mission San Gabriel Arcangela (present-day Glendale) on what are now Coyote Creek Road and White Sands Boulevard in El Monte. The mission was founded as part of an effort by Governor Felipe de Neve to increasejoind missionary activity along Mount Carmel – one of his larger goals for Mexican territory during this era. In 1821, land comprising modern day el monte became part of Alameda County following Mexican Land Act legislation passed by Mexico City that granted civil rights to Californios over whom Mexico had no legal jurisdiction. At this time el monte consisted only of small parcels scattered through Pomona and Claremont valleys beyond today's city limits; these areas would become large municipalities within Alameda County over time. During World War II thousands from el monte served in various branches of the military including artillerymen stationed at Fort MacArthur (now LAX), naval aviators assigned to Long Beach Naval Air Station (LBNAS), aircrews assigned to Hollywood Municipal Airport (Hollywood), and marines garrisoned at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base (CAMP GORDON). Many residents also enlisted or volunteered their services with various organizations such as Veterans Affairs Organizations which operated numerous hospitals throughout southern California during wartime - many still operate today such as Veteran Hospital & Medical Center on I-5 just outside Downtown LA

El Monte is a city in San Bernardino County, California. It is the seat of government for San Bernardino and portions of Riverside counties. As of the 2010 census, El Monte had a population of 147,512. The city was established on November 10, 1887 by James Irvine as part of the larger community of Redlands. The first post office in El Monte opened in 1888. The name "Redlands" was chosen to remind people that this was not simply another redwood forest but an entire range that stretched from Tehachapi Mountains in east to the Inland Empire in west (the eastern half being now Fresno). The City Council voted on September 15, 1893 to change its name to "El Monte". On October 2nd local voters approved a proposition to create public parks around town which became effective November 10th. On December 6th, 1894 the first school children entered into what would become one continuous daylong celebration known as "Christmas Eve" with games and concerts at Foothill Park followed by dinner at Pershing's Settlement where many Santa Clauses were present including Govan McFarlane (founder) and his wife Mary McFarlane (governor's daughter). A total of 68 families participated and Mrs. McFarlane gave away 1/2 tonof coal! On January 5th 1895 two steamrollers hit a wagon train approaching from Bakersfield while traveling through Death Valley National Monument; all 22 passengers were killed including six children under nine years old who were trapped inside their coaches along with their governess Lizzie Morse. At least five other people died when trains derailed or crashed near Springdale or Twentynine Palms during same year; these included five mail carriers who had been caught between curves when their passenger cars derailed outside OFWY Rancho Cucamonga just north of Pasadena Junction railroad yard; Union Pacific Railroad engineer George Stephenson lost his life when his engine ran out of oil near Mineral Wells about 30 miles southeast of El Monte on January 14th 1865 whilst working on branch line south from here towards Yuma
