The City of El Monte was named in honor of Captain George F. Nelson, flagship of Commodore Sutter’s squadron at the time of its founding. The first naval gift to be given to El Monte came in 1892 when Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter donated a warship, USS Constitution, to the city as a tokenof appreciation for military assistance rendered during Mexico’s civil war. She was decommissioned in 1866, but recommissioned in 1870 as an ironclad warship. The Constitution fought in the Civil War and was stricken from the navy list on April 12, 1865. She was sold for scrap metal to a Spanish shipping company on October 3, 1865.
El Monte, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 51,849 at the 2010 census. El Monte is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and is bordered by Monrovia to the south and east, Glendale to the north and west, Lynwood to the northwest, and West Covina to the northeast. The name of El Monte comes from two Spanish words: el monte (mountain) and montaña (hill). The first Europeans to visit what is now El Monte were traders traveling between Mission Santa Cruz de la Sierra in present-day Pasadena and Monterey Bay in 1602. They called this place Montaña de los Cahuillas because of its high mountain range that separated it from Rancho La Venta on both sides of Ventura Boulevard. In 1847 Mexican land grantee José Joaquín Alvarado granted a rancho for $5 per acre to George Hahnemann. The area around Nowata remained under Mexican control until 1848 when it was given back to Alvarado as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1853 James Atherton built a sawmill on Canoga Creek near present-day United States Route 66 while working as foreman at Sutter’s Mill in Visalia. This mill became nationally known for its wide variety of wood products such as lumber, boards, crates, furniture, saddles and wagon parts. Atherton named his mill El Monte after Mount Diablo which he could see from his mill site. In 1860 Doniphan Hughes closed his toll road across Coyote Canyon passageway after only three years operation because no one wanted to pay for aroad with no business potential other than being used as an observation post by troops during various wars fought by Mexico against US forces over several decades including World War II; however southern Nevada pioneers did build an outdoor footbridge over Coyote Canyon Passageway soon afterward which locals also refer to as "ElMonte Bridge". When America gained independence from Spain in 1846 there was much discussion about what should be done with Mexico’s vast possessions including California including claims made by members of Congress such as Thomas Jefferson who thought that if Mexico lost California then she would lose everything so he successfully lobbied for her stay under US rule thereby ensuring Ulysses S Grant became President instead without any actual votes being cast due process being used etc.; but once Californians voted ratified statehood they automatically got all their new rights plus even more territory corresponding with current day Riverside County - basically they get something like 53% or slightly less representation in our legislature yet still receive almost all monies generated statewide although not everyone benefits equally since some people benefit way more than others while most people live within very easy commuting distance regardless so Caltrans knew exactly what they were getting themselves into LOL! A few years later William Mulholland started developing real estate adjoining Canoga Creek outside modern day Riverside County limits where he named his property “Elmont” after himself although today's section code for that particular area is 92501 despite efforts made by local officials over time unsuccessfully trying different techniques like numbering streets etc.; eventually Woodland Hills developed adjacent thereto making things much more difficult especially given that El Monte City Council approved annexation OF THAT AREA BY CITY OF EL MONTE IN 1951 despite protestations FROM WOODLAND HILLS residents who claimed their community had been unfairly taken away!) Some think even earlier settlers may have realized some value in having plenty of open space adjacent rich farmlands providing grazing land/livestock pastures etc.? However those days are long gone apparently! Anyway annexation happened primarily because developers wanted city services closer (the city annexed lots bordering Canoga Creek Valley east & west along I-10 just south Of downtown before annexing sections extending uptown beyond Northridge Blvd.) whereas original plans called for development primarily along arterial roads becoming increasingly gridlocked with traffic congestion possibly exacerbating social issues like housing affordability etc.? What we have now pretty much resulted from ensuing political correctness policiesMuch has changed since thenira señora!!!!!!!!! bitches
