El Paso De Robles is a town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 25,744 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in San Bernardino County after Riverside. The first Europeans to visit El Paso De Robles were Spanish Franciscans who came looking for a route to Santa Barbara. Father Francisco Lopez de Cordoba and his party of friars arrived on February 24, 1769 and built the Mission San Antonio del Buen Retiro on what is now Oldtown El Paso De Robles. From this mission, Father Lopez established rancho grants scattered throughout present-day San Bernardino County. One such grant was Rancho La Brea which extended from modern day Burbank to east of downtown Los Angeles. In 1820, Mexican nationals Juan Bautista Alvarado and Vicente Guerrero founded Rancho Cucamonga within today’s Pomona Valley area of El Paso De Robles. This initial Rancho Cucamonga land grant was enlarged by Alvarado in 1824 when he acquired Rancho La Paloma north of present day Claremont and east of Upland Boulevard in what is now Ventura County; this acquisition added much territory including much of Orange County as well as parts of Riverside and Inyo CountiesToday’s nucleus of Coyote Hills Village are largely traceable back to that original land grant including both their original village site (now unincorporated) on Coyote Hill Road northeast of Upland Boulevard and their later incorporation into the City of Thousand Oaks which included Coyote Hills Village adjacent thereto as part of its southeastern boundary
El Paso De Robles was founded in 1851 by Don Carlos Antonio de la Vega. The original town site was located on the east bank of the Rio Grande, about a mile south of present-day El Paso. A post office was established at El Paso in 1854, and development began around that time. In 1861, when California became a state, El Paso De Robles became part of it. In 1872, after Mexico defaulted on its debt to the United States, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered Mexican forces to withdraw from California. As a result of this move, most of eastern New Mexico and southern Arizona were annexed into California as well. In 1875, city officials decided to rename the town for General José Joaquín Morelos during his visit to the area; he had been givencommand of an army corps besieging Tucson at that time. The name stuck and has been used ever since. A courthouse was built in 1880 and replaced in 1915; both structures are still extant today. In 1901, El Paso City limits were created including portions of what is now Riverside County and parts of San Bernardino County; these boundaries remain in place today. The first post office closed in 1916 because postal service was discontinued due to World War I; it reopened two years later but stopped receiving mail again until 1951 due to lack of space.
