There is no one answer to how maga coffee began. It could be that a natural gas discovery in the El Paso area led to its growth, or that the influx of Hispanic immigrants made for better ground coffee. Whatever the reason, maga coffee quickly became a popular drink in El Paso De Robles and throughout Central California. Maga Coffee was first brewed in 1886 by José “Pancho” Valdés and Francisco “Pepe” Reyes. The beans were roasted over an open fire in their home on Loreto Street. Valdés and Reyes would also travel to Mexico City to buy beans from masters of roasting, who would then package them and send them back east to Los Angeles County. In 1892, Valdés opened his own business, La Casa de Maga Coffee & Tea Co., which soon became one of the most successful java joints in town. In 1906, Alfredo Montoya founded The Java House on Market Street in downtown El Paso De Robles with the intention of bringing quality java to central CA. He sourced his beans from master roasters across America, specifically those located at The Java House and at two other restaurants called The Cafe de la Liga (now closed) and The Plaza (now defunct). Montoya continued operations until his death in 1944. The popularity of maga coffee spread through word-of-mouth among friends and family, as well as through visits from local businessmen looking for uniqueoma ryeproduction costs under $5/pound when compared with other locales such as San Francisco or Sacramento Chinatowns where prices were often more than $10/ pound . By 1951, maga coffee had become so popular that it was featured prominently on menus at several local cafes including Café del Sol (now closed), Café Bravo (now defunct), Don Julio's Mexican restaurant (closed), Zenda Cafeteria ( now defunct ), Peddle Dogs cafe (closed), Sammy’s Pizza place(closed). Eventually, all these businesses merged into one mega-restaurant called Sam’s Club which began operations in 1957 serving up some of our most iconic dishes including my favorite: genever soup followed by strong black tea with lemon Verbena infusion

The largest employer until 1965 was Pacific Bell Telephone Company which built telephone poles in El Paso to reach other parts of Southern California. El Paso De Robles is a small town located in the east side of San Diego County, California. The first European to visit El Paso was Father Francisco García de la Vega on October 9, 1769. He traveled as part of a group led by Juan Bautista Alvarado and included Franciscan friars José Joaquín Chávez and Gaspar de Portolà. After visiting Mission San Fernando Rey (founded in 1821), García returned to El Paso on January 10, 1770 with seventeen other Jesuits from Asuncion, Paraguay. He named the settlement "Las Nieves" after his previous monastery at Nieva de los Reyes inSpain. In 1837 Mexican General Antonio López Mena built the Presidio of Santa Fe at the junction of Rancho Penitenciario Runnels and Rancho del Norte where he had earlier established an adobe hacienda called La Junta (The Junction). In 1850 Ulysses S. Grant purchased the presidio from Mena for $20,000 cash and added 1,800 acres (650 hectares) to it including what is now downtown El PasoDe Robles. The land became Grant's ranchos y otras rancheros y campamentos publicos or Public Lands and Campsites public lands; it was later renamed Grant Park after him Grant's gift also included surrounding hills which served as boundaries for his rancho until 1912 when they were re-allocated to local municipalities through Proposition 83 On November 15th 1860 7-year old Johnnie Rayburn came across three gold coins while playing near Pueblo Viejo Mexico-Una Hora south of today's town limits about six miles east of Grants Adobe/El Paso Road A man walking his dog saw them and took them home where he showed them to his father who then took them to Tucson Spanish Immigrant James Waddell who told Johnnie that he found five more coins at Puebloan Villa near Tucson Arizona on February 22nd 1861 It is uncertain if these were ever counted but one coin probably worth $5 US still remains missing today On July 3rd 1865 four more gold coins were found by prospectors working in wash Jobs Creek off road 2 mile north of Grants Adobe/El Paso Rd just west of Today's Post Office When these new discoveries were announced back East Republican Congressman Tom Donahue went looking for them himself only to find out they had been lost during shipment Please see PDF fileHistoryofGrant parkfor additional details
