El Paso De Robles is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is located on US-101 south of Paso Robles and east of Interstate 805. The town started as an agricultural community, but now it is a bedroom community for the larger cities around it. In its early years, El Paso De Robles was known for its cheese products and wine. Today, there are many businesses that provide services to residents such as home health care, law enforcement, grocery store, bowling alley and movie theaters. The first European to visit what is now El Paso De Robles was Antonio López de Portocarrero in 1542 when he landed on the coast of present-day San Luis Obispo County. A mission was established here in 1777 by Father Francisco Xavier Durán with help from José Maria Cantú y Vargas; it became known as Mission San Juan Capistrano (1801). In 1821 Mexican land grantee José Joaquín Cámpora acquired Rancho Los Olivos from Reyes Alvarado which extended down into what is today El Paso De Robles. In 1834 he divided this land among his six children - four went north to Rancho Santa Anita near Oxnard (now Ventura) while two went south to Rancho La Purísima about five miles east of today's downtown El PasoDeRobles (now part of the city of Paso Robles). It wasn’t until 1865 that another grantee – James Hahn – acquired title to 1/2 mile (1 km) southeast of present day downtown El Paseo between Rinconada Road and Mesa Road which led directly into modern day town limits. From 1865 until 1868 James Hahn was also collector general for customs at ports along the Central Coast; during this time he added much acreage to what would become rancho Los Olivos including today’s eastern edge of town limits where he built his largest ranch house still standing today called “Hahn’sdomain” censer still stands next door! In 1886 Edwin Bicknell bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) southwest corner lot #3 in downtown El Paseo from James Hahn which led him to build one or more large buildings on this property long considered Town Hall building still standing across Rinconada Rd just outside modern day boundaries of town limits although not currently used as such
