El Segundo, California is a small city in southern San Diego County. It was first settled by Anglo-Mexican Americans in the early 1850s. The city experienced significant growth during the 1920s and 1930s as a result of its location on the main line of Interstate 5. However, El Segundo has been declining since then and now ranks as one of Southern California's poorest cities. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now El Segundo were Native American people who lived there for centuries before European settlers arrived. In 1769, Manuel Nieto de la Portilla y Narváez estimated that there were “seventy five thousand natives” living in coastal San Diego County. By 1821, there were only "a few hundred" people living in what is now El Segundo. Spanish colonists arrived in San Diego County beginning in 1769 and began to establish themselves along the coast. In 1776, Father José del Carmen Pacheco established a Mission settlement at Point Loma near present-day North Park Avenue and East Second Street. A year later, Juan Rodríguez de Torres founded Mission San Antonio de Asís at what is now Harbor Island off the coast of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Iberian colonists also landed in San Diego County during this time period; however, they did not establish any missions or settlements here until after Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821 became effective. In 1853, Captain Fernando Hurtado Caballero discovered oil reserves near present-day El Segundo when he prospected for oil within 50 miles (80 kilometers) of San Diego City limits with his steamboat La Bandera . This led to increased development around Los Angeles Harbor because transportation became available for goods brought intoLos Angeles from elsewhere across Southern California through this route instead of having to travel throughSan Francisco Bay or sailing around Cape Horn . The discovery also led to an influx of Mexican immigrants into southern San Diego County because jobs associated with oil production required good German and Spanish language skills which many Mexicans lacked . A group of English-speaking entrepreneurs called The Pacific Railroad Company leased land adjoining Caballero's discovery field on November 1, 1863; construction began immediately on a railroad linking downtown Los Angeles with Imperial Valley townships east of Pasadena and north of Long Beach . The company reached El Seguno by December 1863 and completed construction onDecember 12thof that year; service began six days later providing transportation between Los Angeles and Imperial Valley villages east of Pasadena et al.. At its peak traffic had grown to 350 passengers per day! The railroads helped spur further development around Los Angeles Harbor because it no longer took boats or railways to bring goods into town from inland areas like Carmel Valley or nearby Surrounding Towns
