The El Segundo Coast Guard Station was established in 1922 and has been providing law enforcement services to the community since then. The area that would become El Segundo was first settled by Mexicans in 1846 as Rancho San Vicente de la Laguna; it was annexed by Los Angeles County on December 4, 1907. The population of El Segundo grew rapidly following World War II and reached its peak of 171,569 in 1960 before declining to 67,425 by 2000. However, recent growth has begun to reverse and the city's population now stands at 70,622 according to the 2010 census. The city is located on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles and bordered by Anaheim Hills to the east and south; Harbor Boulevard to the north and west; La Brea Tar Pits to the northwest and northeast. According to The Times article "What's Behind EL SEGUNDO'S DECLINE?" (January 1st 2003), "One reason for [the decline] may be an ever-growing number of residents who commute into cities such asLA orIrvine". It also states that "el segundo urban corridor" doesn't have much development potential because there are few job opportunities available within a radius of 5 miles from where people live or work outside of their jobs commuting into town for work... In other words: Angelenos prefer less densely populated areas closer to their workplaces than those found in El Segundo."

El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is the southernmost city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and it lies on the eastern border of Orange County. The population was 54,358 as of 2010. It was founded by Mexican Americans in 1872 as part of what would become Southern California. The name "El Segundo" means "the second place." The original settlers were Mexicano-American ranchers who had come from San Diego and Rancho Cucamonga. They named their new town after their old home town of El Paso, Texas (now part of McAllen, Texas). In 1875 they established a post office at the mouth of Crystal River Creek where it joins Laguna Seca Creek. In 1886 when Southern California became an independent state, El Segundo became its capital. The city's first mayor was Hilario Aguilar and its first City Councilman was José Joaquín Peralta García. At that time there were only eight families living in El Segundo; today it has over 100 families living there permanently or transiently. The first public school opened in 1898 and was known as La Casa de la Esperanza which served district 1 until 1915 when it moved to Irvine Avenue due to zoning changes made by then-Governor Alvarado Railway Company president John D’Arcy Hastings . The current building – now called “Alvarado Elementary” – opened in 1923 with grades K through 8th grade serving pupils from Lynwood Village north of Interstate 5 near Riverside Drive until 1958 when all schools within Irvine Boulevard District 2 were integrated into one unified system under the auspices of then- superintendent Driscoll Jordon; this building still stands today next to Harbor Freeway on Lankershim Boulevard.) In 1916 Mayor Aguilar proposed creating a park on what is now Verdugo Road adjacent to his ranch but no action took place because he died suddenly just prior to taking office In 1933 Mayor Fortunato put up a campaign sign that reads “No Skateboarding On Our Streets!” A few months later however skaters started coming down Verdugo Road so mayor Fortunato ordered police to remove the sign
The city of El Segundo was founded on December 4, 1888 by two brothers, George and Augustus H. El Segundo. The city was named after the Sequoia National Park in California. The first post office in the city was established on January 5, 1889. In 1913, the City of El Segundo merged with neighboring cities to form a new government entity known as the City of Los Angeles County.
