After the Mexican–American War (1846–48), Mexico ceded California to the United States as part of what became known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1871, two years after Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States, he designated parts of southern Los Angeles County as Soberano Rancho Adobe Land Reserve for single men who had cleared land or built houses there without compensation from their owners. These men were called "El Segundo". In 1915, when Pasadena was annexed into Los Angeles County and development began along Mulholland Boulevard east of downtown Los Angeles, citrus groves and farmland began to be developed near present-day Hillcrest Avenue and Victory Road in what is now El Segundo Hills
