It is located on the San Diego–Tijuana border and shares borders with Tijuana to the south and east, and Lancaster to the north. In 1824 El Segundo was founded as a result of land grants from José Joaquín de Olvera y Costilla y el Conquistador. The town's first post office opened in 1851. In 1886, El Segundo became part of the newly formed City of San Diego when that city was created from portions of five other towns in southern Orange County. In January 2000, voters passed Proposition 218 which repealed most of the restrictions on marriage that had been placed on it by previous state legislatures since Proposition 19 (1948). As a result of this measure, same-sex weddings became legal throughout most of California starting on July 16th, 2000.
