There are many Marines who have served in El Segundo, California over the years. Some of these Marines fought and died in World War II or during the Korean War. Others were drafted into the Marine Corps after 9/11, and they have since been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and other combat theaters of war. But there is one Marine who has always stood out as a gift-giver: Sergeant First Class Christopher Kappeler. Sergeant First Class Christopher Kappeler was born on December 8th, 1984, in San Diego County. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on November 25th, 2006. After basic training at Camp Pendleton he was sent to Okinawa for four months of training where he learned how to use his rifle and grenades. He then returned home and was placed into barracks at Oceanside Naval Base. Christopher Kappeler’s first deployment was to Afghanistan in 2009 as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to help support NATO forces fighting against Taliban insurgents. In March 2010 he deployed again withtrip when President Obama announced Operation Neptune’s Spear II which involved more than 1,500 Marines from 34 units across 21 states committed to fight against terrorism inside Afghanistan as well as train Afghan security forces. The battle was eventually won by U.S.-led coalition forces in late 2011 but Sgt Kappeler spent six weeks recovering from surgery after sustaining a injuries that required eight staples above his left eye due to an IED blast that took his helmet off while he slept outside his tent at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Faryab near Kabul airport on October 10th, 2011). After experiencing what it was like being wounded for real this time around Sgt Kappeler decided it would be best if he just didn’t serve any more tours until he had healed up completely so that he could enter back into the military without any further risks or disabilities (he completed repairs and re-enlisted on January 6th 2012). As part of National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 (NDAA) provision 3109(a)(1), “the President is authorized [to] provide financial assistance for long-term physical rehabilitation expenses incurred by members serving under this title when such members are not able or unwilling to deploy because of an injury sustained during their tour of duty…. Members receiving financial assistance may also receive medical treatment and care not available through normal medical procedures…[and] may not be transferred out Of service without prior written approval from Headquarters Marine Corps…. This authority expires six months after the date it is granted…..” It should be noted that despite having no active duty service obligation remaining Sergeant Kappeler remains honorably discharged with full benefits pending; something that many veterans do not have access too

El Segundo, California is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California. It lies on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley, bordered by Fullerton to the north and west, and Sherman Oaks to the south. The population was 15,912 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now El Segundo were Franciscan Missionaries who founded a small town called San Pedro de la Laguna on 1 January 1788. Their mission was abandoned in 1802 and then again in 1805 after Mexican forces burned down theMission San Pedro de la Laguna monastery complex. In 1836, Rancho Santa Anita layadjacent to present-day El Segundo and became part of it when it was acquired by George Wemyss for $2 million from his brotherumbing Louisa May Alcott’s father Randolph May Alcott (1804-1868). Wemyss had married Anna Palmer (1807-1872), daughter of Commodore John D’Arcy Pelham (1792-1847) of Newport News Shipbuilding Company and his wife Elizabeth Wayles Parsons (1795-1865). In 1881 Leland Stanford Jr., son of railroad magnate Leland Stanford Sr., boughtrancho Santa Anita from Wemyss for $40 million. He turned it into one large horse racing track that became one of America’s most popular tourist destinations with events such as The Golden Age Stakes which attracted American millionaires such as William Randolph Hearst and Andrew Carnegie while also providing employment for more than 3,000 workers including 400 horses trainers. As development picked up around him in early 20th century El Segundo grew rapidly becoming known as “the new Beverly Hills” although its original name may have been chosen because it offered more space for automobiles than other nearby towns like South Pasadena or Culver City which were both served by streetcar lines at that time. In 1923 he established himself as a movie mogul producing some of Hollywood's biggest stars including Rudolph Valentino, James Stewart and Marilyn Monroe along with many legendary independent films such as "The Jazz Singer"and "itizen Kane". He also founded Cinerama Corporation which developed several pioneering motion pictures techniques including "Cinderella"and "Gone With The Wind". His death in 1951 caused a power struggle between his two sons over control of his film empire with younger son Steven Spielberg emerging victorious but only temporarily until Ewbank & Co., heirs to Cinerama Corporation died young In 1986 Steven Spielberg purchased back all private rights to go back into production on what would become masterpieces such as "Ender's Game", "Jurassic Park", etc... In the early 1800s, El Segundo was a small agricultural town in Southern California. In 1853, when California became a state, El Segundo became one of its first official municipalities.
