El Segundo is a municipality in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 78,711 at the 2010 census. El Segundo's municipal government is headquartered in downtown El Segundo with additional offices in Northridge and Malibu. The first Europeans to visit what is now El Segundo were Pedro Nieto and Felipe de la Rúa, who explored the area around present-day Santa Ana on July 24, 1769. A mission was founded here by Franciscan friars under the name of San Gabriel Mission on October 15, 1821; it was abandoned in 1827. A second mission called Nuestra Señora de las Rosas Mission was built here on November 10, 1830 by Fray Antonio Canova; it also served as an adobe mission until 1840 when it became a brick building known as La Brea Tariff House (now part of City Hall). In 1853 Richard Park bought Rancho Rinconada from José Joaquin Cisneros for $4,000; he named it Rinconada del Norte after his father-in-law’s rancho that he had visited earlier in Mexico land holdings which included present day Nopalera Canyon and parts of western Riverside County. Park developed this land into one of Southern California’s most productive agricultural regions during the early years following Californication with large acreage being devoted to citrus production (1860–1920). As citrus production declined during World War II due to competition from other crops such as wheat production elsewhere in Southern California, park sold much of his property including Rinconada del Norte to Rayon Industries Incorporated for development into heavy industrial areas adjacent to Interstate 5/UCLA campus area known today as Northridge and Malibu Hills neighborhoods east of Interstate 5 along Ventura Boulevard between Carson Drive and Indian Wells Road/State Route 137 (now I-5/La Cañada Flintridge Boulevard). Today much or all former Rayon Industries sites are still used for industrial purposes although many have been redeveloped into new housing developments since industry’s decline. During post-war period there were several waves of ethnic groups moving into South Central LA: Mexican Americans arrived first from their rural homes northward along Interstate 10 then southward through Orange County; Puerto Rican migration began latecomers streaming down 6th Street NW between Washington Blvd./US 101W (then Alameda Street) UIUC campus area coming overland through San Bernardino County Agricultural Experiment Station boundary line then continuing southwest across US 101E towards downtown Los Angeles; some African American families moved out west past Chavez Ravine onto Wilmington Avenue thence becoming white flight elements within black enclaves within city limits subsequent to Watts riots; Japanese Americans relocated inland once they became eligible for citizenship during war years 1946 through 1949 via Hiroaki Yamamoto family relocation program established by California state government which provided financial assistance up front but no residency rights thereafter

Some examples of what have been exchanged through these gift programs include: • Aircraft carrier air conditioning units: The USS Enterprise (CVN 71) became one of the first warships in history to be equipped with air conditioning units when it received one from Japan in 1978; • Submarine warfare torpedoes: In 1990, HMS Cornwallis became one of two Royal Navy submarines to receive torpedo launchers courtesy of American manufacturer Raytheon; • Missile Defense Treaty Treaty missiles: The USS George WASHINGTON (LHD 9) was donated by Japan in 1995 as part of their defense cooperation agreement; • Cooperative Cyber Defense Initiative missile systems: In 2006, Bulgaria gifted two missile systems – BM-21 Sidewinder anti-ship missiles system and BTR-60 armored personnel carrier – which were subsequently sent back home after being used against Bulgarian military targets by NATO members Croatia, Romania etc.; • Virginia class submarine tender ship “Cleveland”: This ship was gifted by Sweden in 2009 as part of their 10th anniversary cooperation treaty; • Russian Federation Helicopter Training Squadron helicopter pads at NAS Jacksonville: These helicopter pads were gifted by Russia in 2010 as part of their Elmendorf Air Force Base Cooperation Agreement campaign; In recent years there have been several additions to this list including unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), autonomous boats/ships patrol capabilities and even gaming platforms for small children. El Segundo, California is located in Southern California on the eastern side of San Diego County. The community was first established in 1894 as a small rancho called Rancho Viejo and became an important node in the railroad industry. In 1916, it was renamed El Segundo and incorporation as a city followed in 1923. The economy of El Segundo has been largely based on its location within the automotive manufacturing and service industries since the early days of Los Angeles automobile production. Today, El Segundo is one of the most successful cities in Southern California because of its strengths as both a business and cultural center. The town's earliest residents were Spanish settlers who arrived from Guatemala in 1834. They founded a small adobe settlement known as Villa de la Paz about two miles east of present-day El Segundo Boulevard. By 1836, La Paz had grown to include a population of 150 people and several shops and stores had been built including one owned by José María del Valle y Castro which served as an early post office. In 1854, Juan Bautista Barragán purchased Rancho Viejo from Anahuac Indians for $2,500 cash plus 4 horses and 10 acres (8 hectares). That same year saw possible development when sugarcane plantations were established along the coast near Point Loma but no real progress was made until 1865 when Mexican land grants were given to American citizens Francisco Sarmiento and Antonio Banderas. A group led by Captain John Crespi began developing what would become known as Rancho Encanto which included portions of today's El Segundo Boulevard between First Street northward to Third Street then southward to Laurel Avenue before crossing Laurel into present-day Victorville appellation (now part of Palmdale). With these new resources at hand, developers soon started purchasing adjacent Indian lands for use as their own ranchos or subdivisions with names such as La Jolla Creek Rancho; Del Rey Farms; Tierra Buena; Vista Hermosa; Playa del Carmen Estancia; Señorita Cristina Estancia; Cahuenga Hills Estancia; Santa Anita Park Estate & General Store #1 etc.. One such rancher who received this type of acreage purchase was Manuel Nieto whose holdings ran from Covella Road northeast to Harbor Drive then southeast inland to Mission Bayou where he purchased additional tracts totaling 607 acres (248 hectares) that became known collectively as el Agua Dulce (the sweet water). Many prominent men who bought property here during this period also formed partnerships with Perez or other ranchers becoming partners in ice cream businesses such Asociación Agricola Frigorífica Mexicana S/A.; Sociedad Anonima Fábrica de Puertas y Ventanas Metalúrgicas Nacionales S/A.; Compania Mexicana de Fábricas de Llaves et al.. Eventually some 20 companies controlled more than 60% of all industrial output here during the 1920s-30s despite occasionalrikes by union workers over low wages. Despite high unemployment rates throughout much OFUELROBAZO they managed continue heavyproduction through World War II while other companies closed down due to wartime rationing shortages
