Ortega sold his holdings in the town to John Drysdale in 1912 and it continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak of population with over 210 residents in 1916. In that year, Drysdale donated land to the city for use as an open-air park which became known as "Drysdale Park." During World War II, El Segundo played a key role as one of two small ports on Southern California Harbor facilities used by the United States Coast Guard for loading munitions and supplies entering or leaving Japan during World War II. The port served also as a staging ground for Operation Crossroads (1944), when U.S., British and Soviet troops invaded Japan; and Operation Market Garden (1947), when Allied forces invaded Europe through Spain
