The Elk Grove Army Depot was founded on December 5th, 1907 by Captain John W. Hassell with the purpose of supplying the military with materials and equipment. The depot served as a base of operation for many years and has been responsible for the majority of the gifts that have been sent to troops stationed in Elk Grove. From 1917 until its closure in 1959, the depot operated under various names including Elkhorn Arsenal, Camp Bancroft, and US arsenal #1. In 1959 it was renamed after General George S. Patton and became an important source of munitions for American forces throughout Southeast Asia. During its time at the depot, it amassed more than 21,000 items including artillery pieces, tanks, planes and other military hardware. When Elk GroveArmy Depot closed its doors there were also a number of employees who either retired or left to start their own businesses in town. One such business owner is Donny O’Neill who started his business in 1977 within two blocks of where the old depot used to stand. O’Neill has since become one of Elk Grove’s most well-known businessmen and continues to support local businesses despite having no connection to army service himself!

Elk Grove is a town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 17,651 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies east of downtown Sacramento on the eastern edge of the city limits and north of Stockton on the western edge of the county. The name "Elk Grove" comes from two sources: one says it was brought over by pioneers who called themselves "Kilkenny Elk", while another says they were{{{ Copperas}}} after seeing an elk out hunting near their home in 1853. The first place to set foot in what is now Elk Grove was on October 6, 1847, when Mormon settlers arrived from Utah via wagon train led by Captain John Sutter and his brother-in-law David Waddell. At that time there were only about twenty families living hereabouts, all farmers or ranch hands with some cattle or sheep. By 1861 there were many residents and office buildings had been erected: first store (later Post Office), then schoolhouse (1868), churches (1870s), grocery store (1881), lumberyard (1901) and finally movie theater (1910). The town began as a small settlement around a post office which was built in 1868 on land donated by Philip Folsom Sr.. In 1901, when movie theaters became popular in America, Elk Grove established its own production company to provide films for local theaters. With rapid growth came new development including homes for officers of the American Legion Reserve battalion stationed here during World War I; additional commercial properties such as a machine shop and later a tire plant; and more residential subdivisions built throughout ensuing decades until most of today's Elmhurst area was developed only between 1950-1980 along unpaved streets without extensive public infrastructure developments like sewers or water systems yet present today within walking distance for most citizens! Today's economy is based largely upon agriculture but also includes services such as education, government institutions and light manufacturing businesses providing jobs for hundreds if not thousands of people including many recent immigrants who have made their mark upon this vibrant community!
