The Elk Grove Army Reserve unit was organized on October 15, 1942. The unit was named the 8th Infantry Battalion and activated at Fort Santa Rosa in Northern California. The battalion served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as part of the United States Army Forces Far East (USAFFE). In 1945, the battalion returned to California and was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Infantry Regiment at Fort Lewis. In 1951, the battalion became a regiment within the newly created 1st Infantry Division. The division headquarters were located at Fort Lewis and then moved to Japan in 1952 where it served as an occupation force until 1957 when it withdrew back to the United States. After service in Japan, the regiment deployed to Korea in 1960 where it fought alongside United States allies under General George Custer during Operation Chromite. On December 12, 1968, the battalion was redesignated as a 105mm howitzer battalion within 2nd Infantry Division which had been reactivated from scratch that year followingOperation Desert Storm. The division headquarters were located at Camp Lemonnier outside Cairo before moving northward into Kuwait in early 1969 where they remained until being relieved by 3rd Brigade Combat Team from 2nd Infantry Division on January 17, 1970. In 1974-1975, 1st Infantry Division participated in Exercise Eagle's Claw which simulated an amphibious assault against Repulse Island near Panama City Beach Florida; however no live combat took place due to hostilities erupting between Panamanian forces and American soldiers on October 28th that year with U S Marines engaging local guerrillas known as "the Bay Boys" resulting in over 20 Americans killed including commander Major General James Lickman commanding 1st Battalion 5th Marines who led element of Task Force Tripoli while also serving simultaneously with elements of 2nd Squadron Light Armored Cavalry Regiment providing air support for ground operations; this event is also generally regarded as one of greatest Marine casualties during WWII. 2d Brigade Combat Team disbanded after deployment while 8th IBCT continued practicing artillery missions until disbanding effective February 2003 along with all other reserve battalions having their deployments canceled due to budget cuts caused by recession throughout US military establishment which affected every branch except special operations forces members who continue engaging in clandestine activities under various names such as Blackwater Worldwide Incorporating Erik Prince’s mercenary group Rapid Deployment Unit

Elk Grove, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California. As of the 2010 census, Elk Grove had a population of 98,587. The city was named after John C. Calhoun, who served as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk in the mid-19th century. The first permanent settler in what is now Elk Grove was Nicholas Fenton and his family in 1847. In 1872, George Hearn and his brother Samuel bought 640 acres (252 hectares) east of present-day Elmhurst Avenue from the Creek Indian Nation for $5 per acre ($27 at current prices). They set out to develop it into a town with sawmills, corn mills, flouring plants and other businesses. The town's first store opened on February 8, 1872 at Seventh Street and Wacker Drive. In 1876, John Sutter arrived from Northern California with 10 families and founded Sutterville on 1/4 mile (0.8 km) northeast of present-day Elk Grove City Limits on land he had acquired from the Humboldt Bay Company for $1 per acre ($16 at current prices). The new settlement soon became known as Sutterville because its founder had received help from Jedediah Smith during his exploration of that part of California. In 1886 when Elk Grove incorporated as a city, it amalgamated with nearby Niles to form one municipality with a population of about 3300 people including 3000 residents within 5 miles (8 km) by car or bike across three counties: Sacramento County (the largest), Placer County (the second-largest), Yolo County (smaller but culturally significant) and Contra Costa County which was adjacent to San Francisco Bay Area until 1888 when it became part of Oakland Municipal District

In 1948, when Yosemite National Park was created, much of present-day Elk Grove became part of park boundaries. During the 1960s and 1970s, Elmira College (now Elmira University) moved to Elk Grove from Cupertino with much fanfare because it offered a high quality education at an affordable price point for residents of the rural towns around it. Elmira quickly became well known as one of North America's most vibrant college towns with some OFA members reporting that they felt like "home" after moving there. In recent years, industry has revived Elkhorn Creek Village as a center for economic development within walking distance of many restaurants and stores including Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Lowe's Homebuilding Co., Philips Electronics NV and Safeway NoHo Markets Incorporated.. There are also plans underway to build an undergraduate college at nearby Sutter Health System which would create over 1,000 jobs in addition to expanding current amenities such as medical offices and retail stores within walking distance of campus
