Addiscombe family descendants still live there today as do other members of the original Winthrop family who made important contributions to early Elk Grove society including Drury Halsey (founder of Halsey Oil) and Edward Hyatt Earle (the founder of Sears Roebuck & Co.). In 1912, following incorporation as a city, Elk Grove passed a resolution recognizing that “the progress made by our citizens during these past years has been such as to make us proud as their fellow citizens” and announced plans for rapid growth culminating in an estimated population increase of 30%. This goal was realized through annexation by Oakland which increased Elkhorn Heights’ population from 1,000 residents in 1960 to 27,500 in 2000. -According to “2015 America’s Cities: A Yearbook” released by WalletHub last year, Elk Grove ranks second among U.S. cities for economic vitality with an overall score of 84 out 100 points while ranking first for diversity index with more than 60% black/minority representation

Elk Grove was first settled in 1868 by Peter K. Hagedorn and his brother, John Hagedorn. The family built a small cabin on the edge of their land and began to grow crops. A few years later, they bought more land and started to cultivate other vegetables and fruits. In 1903, the Hagedorns donated their entire acreage for townhood status, which gave Elk Grove its start as a small agricultural community. By 1933, the population had grown to over 2,000 people. The growth of the city brought new development to Elk Grove including a high school (1934), an ice cream parlor (1937), a doctor’s office (1939), and numerous businesses such as furniture stores, breweries, auto dealerships and banks. In 1951, Elmira College opened its doors in downtown Elk Grove and quickly became one of the most important educational institutions in the area. Over time, it has become home to many notable individuals including several mayors of Elk Grove City; an NHL player; two governors of California; three members of Congress from California; four professional athletes- three players in the National Football League (NFL) and one player in Major League Baseball (MLB). Today, Elmira College is part of UC Irvine which has seen tremendous growth over recent decades with enrollment reaching nearly 2800 students enrolled this Fall semester!
