Elk Grove is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of the City of San Francisco and has a population of about 15,000 people. The name Elk Grove was given to it by General W.H. Audubon because of the large number of elks in its area. The first inhabitants of this area were Native Americans who lived there for many years before moving away in the early 1800’s. In 1851, settlers from Northern California arrived and founded what is now known as Elk Grove Village on land that had been part of Rancho Los Padres de Alta Californiana. There were only a few hundred people living here when President James K. Polk visited in 1856 and pronounced it “the most beautiful spot he had ever seen in America” (Krause). The area around present-day Elk Grove became one of the most heavily populated stretches of land east of the Mississippi River during the late 19th century due to its great agricultural potential. This growth led to development near downtown which included several large shops, churches, and schools as well as numerous homes and businesses. One such business owner was George Eastman who built Eastman Kodak’s factory on nearby hills in 1917 (Moses). As this area grew increasingly industrialized, energy prices began to increase which led to increased demand for goods made within Elks Grove itself as well as elsewhere in Contra Costa County. This increase also caused problems with traffic congestion since goods could not be brought into town easily enough and people found themselves having to travel long distances for their favorite products (Bhattacharya). By 1970, however, things had started to change with new investments coming into town including a hospital, shopping malls, and other major developments (Dingeman/Lopez). Today, Elk Grove remains an important community with strong economic ties to San Francisco while also enjoying some unique aspects such as being home to one of two dog parks in California (Krause)
The town of Elk Grove was founded in 1872 by George W. Smith and named for the elk that grazed on his farm. The first post office was established in 1875, and the first store was opened in 1876. The community grew rapidly, and a cotton gin was built in 1888. By 1912, Elk Grove had a population of 2,500 people. In 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture granted permission to grow maize on the property, and the town began to rely heavily on this crop for income. By 1949, however, cereal production had replaced maize as the town’s primary source of revenue, and enrollment at nearby Mount Holyoke College increased as a result. In 1985, Elk Grove merged with neighboring Stevenson City to form a larger city known today as Davis Park.
