Elk Grove is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 105,883 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is one of the most affluent cities in California and has been dubbed "The City of Oaks". It is bordered by Concord to the north, Walnut Creek to the east, Half Moon Bay to the south and San Francisco to the west. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Elk Grove were fur traders. In 1817, José Maria Urrutia founded Rancho San Pablo de las Pulgas (later Rancho Santa Clara) on El Camino Real near present-day Foster Avenue. The ranch was sold in 1835 to John Sutter and Carlos Burt for 400 acres of land that included present-day Elk Grove. In 1849, Sutter built his ranch house at 9000 Elmhurst Road which remains standing today as a reminder of his early days in this area. In 1850, US Mexico acquired Alviso from American interests during war with Mexico called "the Mexican War." America regained Alviso from Mexico on October 25th 1853 when General Antonio Lopez De Santa Ana surrendered it after five months of battle at Rio Piedras Naval Station. On December 4th 1850, under order of President Zachary Taylor as part of an effort to end Mexican slave trade within America through treaties concluded between our two nations; all slaves remaining on missions or farms east of San Francisco were seized by orderof President Polk along with their masters and brought back into America where they were auctioned off according to race and gender - women fetching $200 per head while men could bring home up to $600 per head! This operation began known as theraidenforced migration across state lines which ended less than one year later when General Lopez De Santa Ana surrendered at Buena Vista Barracks following a siege lasting four months! In 1865 – 66 US troops fought during Reconstruction under General James Ewell Moore who became military governor for California’s Central Valley region including Elkhorn Valley providing much needed food for soldiers garrisoning various points throughout California including Fort Point on July 6th 1865 about 20 miles north of Sacramento; Grant’s Army crossed Bear River Bridge over swollen river near present day Folsom Street just south of downtown Sacramento about 5pm on September 17th 1865 following three days long march from Camp Kearny fifty miles distant - only 2% casualties occurred during these engagements against well trained Mexican forces averaging 50 rounds fired each!! One hundred years later we can still walk amongst these historically significant sites within walking distance!!! Elk Grove, California was first settled in 1859 by George A. Smith and his wife Eliza Ann. The town was named for the elks that were found there. The first post office was established in 1859, and the first street was named Elm Street. In 1865, the town became a part of Sacramento County. In 1872, Elk Grove incorporated as a city. On November 3rd, 1886, Elk Grove Mayor John D’Angelo died after a long illness and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento.
