Elk Grove, California is a small city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 23,878 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and is bordered by Contra Costa County to the east, Napa County to the south, Alameda County to the west and north, and San Jose City to the northwest. The name "Elk Grove" was given to it by Captain John C. Fremont for his large herd of elk that he had discovered in 1849 during his exploration of southern California. The city began as a small cluster of farms around what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Tuolumne Road. In 1907, Elk Grove voters adopted a local government ordinance creating a City Council with fifteen members, who were elected at-large. In 1924, construction began on what would become Elk Grove Village – then one of Californias first planned communities. The original village plat included 522 acres (220 hectares), including much of present-day Elmhurst Avenue and Tuolumne Road – more than double what is now offered in offers for sale today. The $27 million project was completed in 1928 and became one of North America's largest housing projects before being condemned as uneconomical and sold off in 1949. Development continued through World War II until 1948 when gasoline rationing ended which halted further growth; however some new buildings were constructed during this time such as Elks Clubhouse which still stands today on Elmhurst Avenue near Green Street corner).

Elk Grove is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco and lies east of Interstate80. Elk Grove was established in 1879 by American businessmen John M. Eldredge and George W. Dixon as a farming community named after a grove of oak trees near the original site of the town. In 1898, it became part of the City of San Francisco; when that city was merged with Oakland into a single municipality in 1949, Elk Grove remained within San Francisco's limits as an unincorporated community. The first residents of Elk Grove were John Meeks and his family from Maine who arrived in 1875 and took up residence on what is now Elmira Road. By 1878, there were about 20 families living in or around Elk Grove Village; these lived primarily on agriculture but also raised chickens (the first fowl to be domesticated in California), pigs, horses, & dogs for hogs’ flesh or game meat consumption. In 1879 John Eldredge started out as one of two American businessmen working with George W Dixon to developing this new farming community called "Elk Grove". Theynamed their new community after a grove near their old homebase some 10 miles west along I-80 which they had seen while driving downrange from Redwood City during their recent trip to Northern California looking for land for their new venture.. ellkrgrove soon grew rapidly due to its location surrounded by irrigated farmland reaching 6500 feet above sea level making it ideal for growing fruits and vegetables year-round including apples & pears grown hereabouts then exported to markets all over North America… After just 2 years…..John Eldredge died suddenly leaving behind him his wife Fanny who ran the farm until her death 3 years later…. Fanny left 4 children: Harriot (born 1880), John Wesley (1883-1984), Maynard Freeman (1885-1976)and Ernest Harmon (1887-1972). Ernest Harmon succeeded his father as head farmer & operated the farm until he sold it 16 years ago." Eldredge Avenue runs through central Elmira today connecting various historical sites within walking distance such as “The Grapesvine Wood” where farmers would gather early morning to secrete product from the grapevines before shipping off to market under cover of darkness – an activity still occurring today! The Grapesvine Wood Park offers beautiful views across downtown SF towards Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and Bay Bridge Toll plaza!
