Elk Grove is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 29,913 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after Riverside and the fifteenth most populous city in California. Elk Grove is located about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and about 25 miles northwest of Anaheim. The first Europeans to visit what is now Elk Grove were fur traders from Russia and Siberia who set up a trading post near present-day Conejo Street and Rodeo Drive on December 15, 1817. The name "Elk Grove" was given byCaptain James Ketchum of the Russian ship "Saratov". He named two small villages - Thalia Creek and Utopia - after his home country's elks (a species of deer). A grant of 640 acres (240 ha) was made available to him by Juan Pico de la Mirada on November 5, 1824; it included what is now Elk Grove Village. On January 1, 1828, Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill here on land granted by Governor Manuel Nieto as part of Rancho Santa Anita. There were no fences or other barriers between this public domain and private land until1851 when legislation enacted at state level designated large parcels within rancho Santa Anita as “ national forests” which required prescribed fire management for timber production purposes Only 8 years later did we see development with homes being built along Deer Valley Road while much larger tracts like today’s Elmhurst Avenue remained undeveloped until 1916 when Jack London began construction on his huge estate known today as Woodland Hills . Elk Grove is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 27,851 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay Area and is surrounded by suburbs on three sides. It is east of Walnut Creek and west of Menlo Park. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish in 1769 when they sailed up San Francisco bay and noted the large elk abundance there. In 1846, George Copley founded a rancho named Rancho Santa Clara de los Andes near present-day Elk Grove Village. The original village was located on the east side of town between Menlo Park Boulevard and El Camino Real (now Interstate 80). A post office called Elk Grove Village was established in 1868, but no town grew up around it until after 1906 when residents from nearby Palo Alto voted to incorporate as a city with its own government. The development that took place during World War II created many jobs for people in the city. After 1945, Elmira Avenue became one of the most important commercial streets in Silicon Valley because so much technology had been developed there during those years for military use or for developing new products such as Motorola Droid or Apple Macintosh computers. Many warehouses remain today along Elmira Avenue including Google’s first headquarters building which opened in 1976; Apple’s old Research Triangle Park Headquarters building which closed down in 2001; and Intel’s newer campus south of downtown which opened in 2002. In 2001, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that he would run for governor against State Senator Gordon Boggart who had served since 1992 as mayor pro tempore of Sacramento County.
