Navy Deployed Gift History in Elk Grove, California goes back to World War II when the Navy donated a tanker, USS Gridley (AKS-4), for use by the city of Elk Grove. The tanker had been decommissioned and stored at the Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada. In 1945, the City of Elk Grove reached an agreement with the Navy to lease Gridley from Fallon. The City used Gridley as a storage vessel until it was sold to a local family in 1966 and then again to another family in 1978. Finally, it was donated to the city of Elk Grove in 1984. TheCity of Elk Grove has continued using Gridley as their gift history tanker ever since. It is now one of only two gift history tanks remaining on active duty with the Navy. In 2016, Gridley underwent a major restoration which included replacement of all its original equipment and systems. This restored Tanker is once again available for display or use as a museum exhibit about Naval Aviation in California during World War II and later years. The navy deployed gift history in Elk Grove, California began with the USS Constitution on December 12th, 1846. The USS Constitution was a ship of the United States Navy and it served as part of the Mediterranean Squadron. On February 2nd, 1848, the USS Constitution sailed from San Francisco to Naples, Italy with gifts for King Ferdinand VII and Queen Isabella II. The ships return trip was much more eventful as they were bombarded by Spanish forces during their voyage back home. On May 6th, 1850, the USS Constitution sailed from Hampton Roads to Gibraltar with gifts for King George IV and Queen Charlotte of England. Elk Grove is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 17,813 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove makes up part of the northwest quadrant of Sacramento City and is bordered by Jackie Robinson Park to the south, east and north; Manchester Park to the west; and Midtown Sacramento to the south. The first residents of what would become Elk Grove were Native Americans who gathered around an animal pen on May 29, 1846 then journeyed over a flattop land where they hunted deer and elk for food. The site now known as Elmwood Cemetery was chosen because it had a high enough elevation thatgrowth could not cover it. A post office called Elk Grove Village was established in 1852, but it remained primarily a rural community until after California became a state in 1850. In 1862 when Frémont surveyed Yosemite National Park he noted that there were no trees near the Mono River which flowed through his territory. He recommended building roads necessary for settlers access to new land so that citrus crops could be grown and cattle brought into existence. After Frémont's death in 1868 two successive US congressmen decided against giving Yosemite National Park to California due to lack of funds while also recognizing that American Indians had dwelled there for centuries prior thereto without any interference from white people. In 1876 Governor John McKinley vetoed Senate Bill 258 which would have created Yosemite National Park because he felt America should remain open “to all nations” including those without parks like Mexico which he thought should have been given complete control over its natural resources like water resources etc.). Instead Senator James Gadsden (R-Alameda) authored Senate Bill 479 which became law establishing Yosemite Valley within Fresno County with jurisdiction over Elks Grove Village within Sacaton County . When General Grant took office in 1865 he ordered all public lands east of De Pere Creek excepting about 20 square miles located beyond present day Elk Grove Village were sold at $2 per acre to settlers who would cultivate them for agriculture or mining purposes only with compensation paid by FRN Govts Western Mining District when gold was discovered near Sutter Butte outside today's Hayward Area boundary This order led directly to future development along Elkhorn Road as farmers drove their animals past modern day Midtown Sacramento on their way into eastern Sierra Nevada . Today much of this old road has been turned into streets running parallel Interstate 5 although most signage still points out former grazing areas now home to large apartment buildings on top
