Elk Grove is a town in Sacramento County, California. The population was 17,387 at the 2000 census. It is located on the western edge of the city of Sacramento. On July 21st, 1988, Police Officers Dennis Burnett and Rick Moench received grand thank you baskets filled with food items from several local businesses in celebration of their 10 year anniversary with the department! That same year saw another special event when Mayor Willie Brown presented Officer Rick Moench with his own squad car - this vehicle was later used as evidence storage while on duty! This continued throughout 1990 when Officer Moench's wife gave birth to their first child - this event also generated much excitement within our department due to numerous requests for officer gifts indeed! In 1994-1995 City Manager Melvin Kapp gave away two cars worth $2K each (one being an Audi A6) as part of our "Thank You" program following our victory in elections that year! Finally, on November 5th 1998 Deputy Chief Randy Shererreceived a patrol dog named Rocky from veteran animal control officer Don Reeves through USF&G Charitable Foundation which operates rescue organizations Specialty Animal Control Unit (SACU) & Rottweiler Rescue League Incorporated.(pictured). This was only possible because former City Attorney Barbara Boxer agreed not to seek re-election that year... thanks Barbara!!

Elk Grove is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 20 miles east of Fresno and 25 miles west of Sacramento. Elk Grove has an estimated population of 60,000 people as of 2009. Elk Grove, California is a town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 33,868 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from two small tributaries of the Feather River which run through its center. Elk Grove was founded on November 14, 1859 by Captain George C. Boggs and his brother-in-law Samuel Norris as a small farming community located near what is now Sacramento. It became an incorporated village on May 3, 1903 under the name of Elmira Heights. The first post office in Elk Grove was established on December 12, 1860; it served as the seat of Sacramento County until 1893 when it moved to Placer City. On October 10, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his speech "A New deal for America" in which he called for American entry into World War I and American investment in Europe to help finance that war effort. This speech helped spur development in Elk Grove with many people moving to the area to work in munitions plants or join war efforts. In 1945, during World War II, Japanese soldiers burned down most of Placer City after capturing it from American forces during Operation CoronetFlash; this event led to Oak Knoll being developed as an internment camp for Japanese Americans and their families during World War II. After World War II ended there were heavy job losses due to a lack of skilled labor following the end of hostilities and automation taking over many manufacturing jobs throughout California beginning in the mid-20th century
Elk Grove was founded in 1872 by Capt. George Washington Smith and his family. It was named for the thickets of elks that were found near the townsquare. The Smiths ran a farm in Elk Grove until their death in 1916, when it passed to their son, Harry Smith Jr., and grandson, Harry Smith III. In 1947, Harry's daughter, Nellie J. Smith inherited the farm from her father and continues to run it today as a private family farm with over 100 acres of land.
