The Encinitas Army National Guard Armory was originally built in 1918 as the Encinitas Arsenal. The armory was used by the United States military during World War I and II. It also served as a munitions plant during the Korean War and Vietnam War. In 1978, it was sold to the Encinitas city government and became the City Armory. It is now used as a municipal library and is home to the Encinitas Museum of History and Art. The first American army troops arrived in California in 1846, when Captain George Custer led his troop of Seventh Cavalry across the Mexican border into California. It was sold to the California Defense Department in 1951, and became the Encinitas Army Depot. In 1959, it was transferred to the United States Army Corps of Engineers and became known as the Encinitas Army Ammunition Plant. The plant closed in 1996, but reopened as an industrial park in 2006. The armory has been used as a museum since 2000.

It is located on the Pacific Coast and bordered by Redondo Beach to the east, Vista to the north, Encinitas City to the west and Carpinteria to the south. This fort served as an outpost during Mexico's war with United States over succession to Mexican territory following independence from Spain in 1821. After that war ended, American forces burned down much of Mexicali including Captains Coyote's Adobe Fort on November 25th1875 during campaigns against Mexican insurgents under General Antonio López de Santa Anna; it was rebuilt by Army Lieutenant Colonel James Akeley within weeks standards later at a cost of $2 million dollars less than original construction materials! Captain Coyote also began developing irrigated agriculture some 10 miles (16 km) northwest near present day Villa Park while still living inside what is now Coyote Roadhouse complex accessible only by vehicle or public bus tour starting at 6:00am each morning between December 1st1875 until May 14th1978 inclusive! So successful did Captain Coyote's enterprise become that he became known as "the Father of Agriculture in Encinitas."
