Encinitas is a small city in southern California, located on the eastern edge of San Diego County. The population was 41,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. The first European to visit Encinitas was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in December 1542. In 1821, mission work began in Encinitas with Father Junípero Serra providing religious instruction and farm support to the indigenous people of San Miguel Valley. By 1845, Mission San Francisco de Asís had been completed and its priests had begun preaching Christianity to the Ohlone people living near Mission Point on Clear Lake. In 1882, portions of what are now downtown Encinitas were incorporated as a town under the name "Encinal". In 1923, when that town voted to become an independent city it retained its name but changed its boundaries back to encinal after gaining city rights from neighboring Vista del Mar (now Imperial Beach). On November 3, 1933 both cities merged into one for Incorporation purposes which became effective January 1st 1934. On July 14th 1955 a fire destroyed most of downtown Encinitas including much of what is now known as "the oldencinity". Despite extensive damage and numerous injuries over an extended period of time firefighters were not able to completely extinguish the blaze and it continued burning until September 8th 1955 when it finally burned out byproducts off shore and effectively ceased any further fires throughout the city. The fire resulted in $550,000 in damages which still stands as one of only two instances where property damage resulting from a fire has exceed $1 million during twentieth century US history (the other being Superstorm Sandy). Today Encinitas continues as one of America's most vibrant cities with large shopping districts located Downtown along I-5 and Winchester Street just east of Tijuana Boulevard; Old Town off Interstate 5 near Springwater Drive; Naval Base Historic District; new waterfront development including an experienced Marina/Commercial District adjacent to Navy Yard Park & Spa - totaling some 2 square miles - anchored by Sears Tower overlooking Harbor Bay; several thousand residential units built or redeveloped since 2005 primarily situated around Harbor Baywalk & Northshore Drive areas
In 1853, Encinitas was founded by pioneers Juan Rodriguez and his wife, Josefa. The town sprang up around a natural gas field that had been found in the hills near present-dayEncinitas. By 1861, Encinitas had a population of about 100 people. In 1875, the Mexican railroad company Pueblo Grande extended its line through Encinitas and started to make a lot of money from transporting goods between Mexico City and San Francisco. This made Encinitas increasingly important as the commercial center of southern California. The first post office was established in Encinitas in 1876. In 1905, encinita park was created on what is now Main Street east of Navy Boulevard to commemorate the centennial of rancho Santa Anita de las Flores (now Rancho Santa Anita) on which Encinitas lay. A fire destroyed most of downtownEncinitas in 1916 but not before starting a new era forencinita with its growing nightlife and cultural attractions. Reconstruction began immediately with help from the United States government which donated land for a public square and built several theaters including one designed by architect George Biddle (better known as Biddle & Brady).
