At its peak in the 1920s Encinitas had a population of over 50,000 people and was known as "The Gilded Age". The first Europeans to visit what is now Encinitas were Spanish missionaries who came ashore on July 15th, 1602 during their third voyage around America. On October 10th Commodore James Kenedy sailed up San Pedro Gulf towards Acapulco with two ships carrying goods for Mission Dolores; however he encountered no hostility and reached La Jolla on November 3rd without encountering any American vessels or Indians other than some Coast Guard men manning storeships offshore at El Cielo Point Light House who reported seeing nothing but three small boats near them off shore...Kenedy decided not to pursue his mission further and turned back about noonNovember 4th] leaving behind him several valuable cargo items including cannonballsand anchors prohibited by Mexican law because they might have been used against Americans then under occupation...the noted historian Drifting Whales: A Comprehensive History of Southern Pacific Marine Fisheries has argued that since these discoveries no American ship has ever been seen near present day Encinitas since then...although there have been sporadic reports of sperm whales making landfall here over the years...] In 1845 Rancho Santa Anita was sold to José María Carrillo y Pavón who renamed it Californios Land Grant rancho en adelante Californias o Californias Unida where he continued until 1848 when he lost title because of political unrest following Mexican War.. The first Europeans to arrive in Encinitas were the Spanish in 1795. The area was part of Rancho Santa Margarita, which was given to Francisco Palomo by Governor Manuel Nieto on February 20, 1802. The land around Encinitas was purchased from the Mexican government in 1834 by Captain John Sutter and his party as a gift from Bishop James Costa. In 1836, Sutter founded the town of San Miguel de la Laguna on what is now known as Pacific Coast Highway 1 south of town. A post office was established at Encinitas on May 5, 1838, and name changed to Encinitas on October 26, 1850. The population of Encinitas increased rapidly after it became a post office because goods could be shipped there easily for sale. A wharf and landing were built near the present day downtown intersection of Pacific Coast Highway 1 and Main Street in 1852; this allowed goods to be unloaded and delivered directly to homes without having to go through San Miguel de la Laguna or other towns along the way. In 1860, General Antonio López ordered more troops stationed in California due to increasing worries about Mexico's intentions towards Texas. As a result, some ranchers in southern California began selling their land north of Los Angeles as far as Point Conception because they did not want their property confiscated by Mexico if war broke out with Spain over Texas. This led to the founding of Escondido (now Garden Grove) on November 12th of that year as another supply stop for soldiers coming down from Southern California. On January 10th 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), General John Cady Stanton ordered all supplies sent upcountry be stopped at point Conception because he felt that Santa Fe would become an available military base should war break out between America and Mexico. When there wasn't immediate response from General Stanton or President Abraham Lincoln due to lack of supplies, Cady ordered all supplies brought downriver instead so that they could get into position quickly if needed. On April 12th 1861 local residents heard shots fired over their heads from Confederate forces east of Ventura County while awaiting orders from higher authorities back home; this led them quicklyassembling any armaments they could find before fleeing into hiding for days until word arrived back at encinitas that everything had been sorted out and no hostile action took place. Encinitas grew rapidly during its early years due largely to its proximity to points south such as San Diego and Tijuana along with potential shipments coming upriver via boatloads every weeknightfall when boats made landfall just upstream fromencinitas harbor!
