A post office was established at the same time and continues operation today. The first telephone line went into service in 1923 with The Western Electric Company providing service until leased to Southern Pacific Railroad in 1938 following their acquisition of Bell Telephone Laboratories Incorporated. Encinitas, California is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 131,887 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California and its namesake is the Encinitas Fault Zone which runs along its border with Oceanside. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Encinitas were Spanish Franciscans who came ashore from shipwrecked vessels in 1769 and founded two missions: Santa Anita and Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. The area that would become Encinitas was part of Rancho San Pedro y Santa Margarita Mexican land grant given to José Joaquin Mora by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on December 1, 1821. At that time Mission San Juan Capistrano (founded in 1797) was the only mission in San Diego County. The Mora grants covered an area extending from present-day Encinitas all the way to Point Loma on Baja California Mexico before being divided up among other families during Mexican Independence War era. With American entry into World War II encinitas became one of the largest U.S Naval Air Station(USN) sites when it opened as Naval Air Station Miramar on October 15th 1942 under Operation Neptune’s Spear code name JUICE (Joint Expeditionary Attack Force). With three runways and a nearly 2 million square foot hangar complex it was one of America’s largest post-war naval air stations until it closed operationsin 1994 after years of neglect and financial problems caused by Navy cutsbacks during Widespread Destruction Era. In 1969/70 saw construction of new headquarters for then Sheriff's Department including squad cars etc., Administration Building northwest corner of 4th Street & Halsey Avenue; original Jail building old sheriff’s office across street east side 3rd Avenue back then called “Avenue Of Memories" In 1990 City Council sold off majority interest in NAF to US Coast Guard for $1M In 2003 development began on first phase consisting of 579 housing units south side between Pacific Coast Highway & North Park Boulevard; later phases will bring an additional 659 housing units north side between Indian School Road & Pacific Coast Highway In 2006 City Council approved annexation plan for 235 acres annexed from unincorporated community known as Chula Vista
