Encinitas, California is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 10,123 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Monterey Peninsula region. The first Europeans to visit Encinitas were Spanish missionaries in 1769 and they named it "San Miguel de Encinitas" after their leader, Santa Maria la Encinada. In 1821, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna postulated that an arm of Baja California enter through Encinitas on the way to San Francisco Bay. So instead of naming it after his general's hometown (Atocha), Mexican officials named it La Jolla for General Lopez de Santa Anna. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, American forces burned some buildings in La Jolla before retreating out of town. On November 12th of that year Elihu Root asked Ulysses S Grant for military support against Mexico City-based forces loyal to Joaquin Muriel Herrera and he agreed to provide troops and artillery support if needed but never actually did so because he wanted nothing to do with another war between Mexico and America over land boundaries During World War II portions of Encinitas were heavily bombed by Japan which destroyed many homes and businesses as well as leaving a large hole in the center of town where most people lived before rebuilding began almost immediately afterwards On July 24th 1948 local citizens erected a Utopian community called Garden Grove on what is now known as Pineapple Way close to Interstate 5 exit 134 near Watertown Point Lighthouse which soon became known as Garden Grove Village In 1957 encinitas voted itself incorporation into city government becoming one of three cities within San Luis Obispo County . Encinitas is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 391,865 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Encinitas Fault Zone and has been struck by numerous earthquakes. The City of Encinitas was incorporated on July 1, 1876. The first permanent settler in what would become Encinitas were two brothers named John and Samuel Merrill who arrived in 1875 from Illinois. They founded a small farm near present-day Fillmore Avenue and Mission Drive. The Merrill family name survives to this day as one of the most prominent landowners in town today with over 2,000 acres (900 hectares) of land holdings including Castle Rock State Park just east of town and two golf courses - one open to the public and one privately owned - that together have a combined capacity for more than 10,000 guests each year. The first post office in Encinitas opened on December 14, 1876; it was called "Salinita". The first ZIP code within San Diego County was 08144 which served Rancho del Cucamonga until 1959 when it became part of downtown San Diego When county officials decided to merge El Centro into San Diego County (which included all but eastern Orange County), they assigned ZIP codes to both areas; 82101 for Encinitas and 82118 for Rancho del Cucamonga. However, only encinitas residents subscribed to the new numbering system so their neighborhoods continued under their original street names while El Centro received its current ZIP code 02115 The City of Encinitas incorporation occurred on July 1st 1876 with Mayor Akins Ewing as its first mayor In 1907 Encinitas had an election for school board members which resulted in four trustees being elected unopposed including Mrs Gertrude Cunningham who later served as President pro tempore from 1951-1957 . In 1912 city voters approved an amendment to charter giving them veto power over mayoral nominations . After six years without a vote they passed another amendment allowing citizens initiative making it easier for people to get involved in government by approving or vetoing ordinances
