The Escondido Air Force Base was once home to the United States Air Force's Third World Command. It is now one of the largest airfields in California and is used by both military and civilian aviation. The base has been host to a number of air shows over the years, including the Escondido International Air Show and the North American Aerospace Defense Command's Red Flag Competition. One of the most famous airshows held at ESCONDIDO AFB was known as "the Great War Fair." Held every two years since 1903, this event featured aircraft from all over the world, as well as exhibits on military history and tactics. In 1951, ESCONDIDO AFB hosted what was then called "The Greatest Show On Earth," during which more than 200 planes toured the facility.

Escondido, California is a city in Southern California. It is the county seat of San Diego County and home to Escondido Naval Air Station. The population was 713,824 at the 2010 census. The name "Escondido" comes from "es-kon-didi", meaning "to go out of sight." The first people to live here were the Tongva Indians who called it Zuñi Pima, meaning " Place Beyond the Hills." They built their homes near what is now Broadway and Mission Avenue. The town became a port on the Pacific Coast in 1848 when Commodore George Vancouver sailed into San Diego Bay with his squadron of sailboats and ships. The town grew rapidly after that, and by 1852 it had a post office, two churches (St. John's Episcopal Church and Mission Park), three hotels, four stores, six restaurants and twelve dwellings. In 1854 the first stagecoach line arrived from Santa Fe;later mail service brought passengers overland to Escondido from San Bernardino County every day for several years. One reason for this growth was agriculture: land around Escondidoboardwalk was donated by shipowners as well as settlers who bought grants of Rancho de las Pulgas or Rancho Gaviota del Norte ( rancherias de la pampa). In 1861 an expansive new park named Eckerd Block after Rear Admiral Don Edwin Eckerd was opened next door to City Hall on First Street between Main and Girard Streets inside what is now known as National Park Service headquarters Building No. 1 (now part of Town Hall). This area included much of today's downtown core alongMission Boulevard between Third Street south and Fourth Street east including most of present-day Escondidoboardwalk which ran north-south just east of Convent Avenue until its intersection with Second Street in 1870 when it turned southeast corner onto First street underpretending to cross Second Street at Rialto Bridge before actually going across at Estero Creek instead A streetcar line connecting downtown with Point Loma began service in 1902 making it possible for people living outside downtown to get around without coming down through streets they didn't yet know existed like Main or Girard Streets even though they were open to cars! Schools also started appearing around this time such as Stroud School which stands today on North Harbor Drive northeast corner lot adjoining Municipal Auditorium which served grades K-12 until 1959 then moved into new building across Harbor Drive northeast corner lot from Municipal auditorium also serving grades K-12 until 1959; later schools include Montessori School (opened 1971), converted high school building 1925 – current)and Del Valle High School currently serves grades 9th - 12th
