The Escondido Army Garrison was one of the first military installations in California. It was established on December 13, 1851 as a military post for the brigade of volunteers from San Diego County. On September 6, 1852, it became an infantry regiment and on October 1, 1852, it became a battery battalion. The battalion was redesignated the 3rd Infantry Battalion on February 14, 1861 and again in 1862 as the 4th Infantry Battalion. The battalion was redesignated the 2nd Infantry Battalion on April 25, 1865 and finally as theEscondido Army Garrison Regiment on July 15, 1865. On May 10, 1898 during World War II when California became a state with its own army troops stationed statewide in addition to the National Guard forces that had been serving under US war minister Robert K. Muntz since 1942, Escondido Army Garrison Regiment transferred to Camp Douglas which had been established at Red Bluff near Sacramento as part of that state's defense program. Inactivated on October 17th 1945 at Camp Douglas while awaiting demobilization by federal authorities. Inactivation is not generally considered to have ended EscondidoArmy Garrison's military history because there has never been an formal disbandment or disposition plan adopted for it nor has any effort been made to preserve its records or artifacts either administratively or physically. However its name has long disappeared from institutional memory and no longer appears in public records either locally or nationally; thus effectively it may be inactive but still operational having no official designation."

It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after Vista and has been growing rapidly since its incorporation as a city in 1959. The first people to live here were the Ohlone Native Americans who hunted and gathered in the area now known as Escondido. In 1769, Mission San José de la Vieja was founded on land that became Escondido. The mission served as a trading post for goods brought overland by travelers from Sonoma Valley and Santa Barbara County. Mission San José de la Vieja was abandoned in 1821 due to lack of food and missionaries departed shortly thereafter. In 1849, Rancho Descansado (later part ofEscondido) was given to John Teller by Governor Manuel Michelini. This rancho extended from what is now Nordhoff Street south along present-day La Jolla Boulevard east to Point Loma before running north along Point Conception until it reached what is now Balboa Park; it included parts of today's North Park and South Park areas. Teller sold his interest in Rancho Descansado in 1855 to George Hahn; Hahn developed it into one of Southern California's largest citrus plantations; one acre per family was granted to each new owner and he leased out portions of it for agriculture or housing development only In 1957, City Manager Harry Cavanaugh recommended incorporation of Escondido because he believed that growth would result from creating an urban center with high standards of living which could attract businesses and jobs away from nearby Imperial Beach/San Diego Airport City Council approved incorporation on September 11, 1959 Juanita Brophy became the first Mayoralty Vice President The original City Hall building at 3rd Avenue & Nordhoff Street faced demolition but survived until 1978 when it burned down . A new City Hall building designed by local architect Edward Bramlett with funds provided by civic group Citizens for Civic Renewal was built at 2nd Avenue & Nordhoff Street between 1984-1987 . Between 1958-1959and 1978-1981: There were three sessions of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
