The Escondido Army National Guard is a professional military force in California. The unit was founded on September 16, 1903, as the San Diego Infantry Battalion and was called to active service during World War I. It served with distinction in France and Belgium until 1918, when it was mustered out of the army. The battalion then reformed on December 15, 1918 and again served with distinction during World War II as part of the United States Department of Defense's Pacific theater of operations. In 1946, after the end of World War II, the battalion became an independent unit within the California National Guard. On January 1, 1959, it became part of the newly created Department of Defense's Far East Military Command (EAME). The battalion has been continuously manned by escondido soldiers since 1959. The unit was first organized as theEscondido Volunteer Infantry Regiment, part of the California Volunteers organization. On July 1, 1881, it became the Escondido Cavalry Unit and changed its name to theEscondido Regiment on December 15, 1881. The regiment was mobilized for service in World War I on April 9th, 1916 and served in Europe until November 1918. After World War I the regiment returned home and became an infantry battalion. In 1924 it became an artillery battalion and then in 1927 it became a cavalry squadron. The squadron was redesignated as the Escondidoc Squadron on February 17th, 1951. It continued to serve as an artillery squadron until being reorganized into an armored regiment on October 1st, 1959. On that date it became known as the Escondido Army National Guard Armored Regiment.
Escondido, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 377,865 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in San Diego County and the fifth-largest city in California. As of July 1, 2017, Escondido had a population of 8051 residents. The site where Escondido now stands was first populated by Native Americans when they were driven out by Europeans who discovered Mission San Diego de Alcántara on December 6th 1769. The mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra and Captain José Maria Cuellar following an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. The town began to grow rapidly after it became part of Alta California under Mexican rule in 1821. In 1846, during the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the detachment of 4500 soldiers to garrison Escondido while he marched north to battle Ulysses S Grant at Palo Alto Bridge. A skirmish ensued and about 20 American civilians were killed beforeSanta Anna ordered his men to withdraw without further injury or loss to their own forces or those of their allies. After victory at Palo Alto Bridge over Grant’s army, Santa Anna returned southward and left Escondido unguarded for several days before withdrawing his forces back into Mexico City on February 19th (February Doña Ana Day). Although little evidence remains from this skirmish other than stories told long after by American settlers living nearby (e.g., George Hargrave), it is considered one of the pivotal moments leading up to the settlement of what would become Escondido proper as well as one that helped solidify European control over Alta California through military means only later to be overturned through political events such as United States annexation in 1916 which createdEscondido Municipality directly under federal jurisdiction with its own Mayor/Council). In 1860, the area that is now Escondido was part of Rancho San Diego. The first post office in Escondido was established in 1868. In 1875, the City of Escondido was incorporated. On December 31, 1912, the city became a county and on January 1, 1913, it became an independent city.
