Escondido is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 214,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after San Diego. The downtown area has been called "the cultural and commercial center of Escondido" for many years. The history of coffee can be traced back to 1847 when Antonio Lopez de Legazpi founded La Nación Coffee Company in what is now known as Mission Valley. In 1868, Francisco García Márquez established his first coffee farm on the site that later became Escondido. Soon other small businesses sprang up throughout centralEscondido and beyond - including three grocery stores (Bargain Barns, Donny's Hardware and Lumber Yard), two banks (First National Bank and PeoplesBank) and a movie theater (Lone Star Theatre). In 1957, Escondido Mayor Rudy Sanchez placed an order with Mexico City-based roaster Carlos Menocal for over 4 metric tons of beans just before Christmas! This marks the beginning of an important relationship between Escondido and Carlos Menocal that would last until Menocal's death in 2000. That year, Escondidobrokeries Inc., underwritten by Menocal's son Augusto Menocal Jr., opened its doors with a business model based on bulk purchase/sale contracts with local farmers which gave farmers direct access to consumers through co-op marketing channels. Today much of what makes Escondido such a vibrant community comes from its artisanal coffee industry - which dates back to when La Nación Coffee Company sponsored art exhibitions associated with their roastings locations around town (such as at Zuni Café). Each year during Valentine's Day or Cinco de Mayo - or any other special occasion when people want to show appreciation for their favorite merchants - residents gather at one or more of their cafes to enjoy some quality java from one ofEscondido's many fine roasters...
