The Escondido Coast Guard Department was founded in 1923 and includes both the Regular and Reserve Units. The Department is responsible for providing law enforcement and emergency services on the County's 1,200 miles of coastline. In addition to its duties as a coastal guard department, the ECD also provides environmental education and research programs to promote responsible boating behavior. In 1916, when Escondido was first established as an agricultural community, nine men from nearby San Diego founded the San Diego Life Saving Association. They pooled their resources and purchased a launch called "Argosy" from Captain Arthur Wigglesworth. The ECD purchased its first vessel – an old Catalina barkboat named "Majestic" – in 1928. At its inception, the Coast Guard had six officers and fifty-six enlisted men organized into two detachments operating out of two stations located at HP Beach and Point Loma. By 1935, there were twenty-four officers and one hundred forty-six enlisted men organized into twelve detachments operating out of thirteen stations across County boundaries. The growth of the Coast Guard during World War II was significant; by 1941 there were 423 officers/enlisted members working for our Department along with over 3,000 pieces of equipment including five launches (twenty-five feet long), four airplanes (PBYs/AeroMarines), sixteen boats (eighteen feet long), four helicopters (Hercules) and fifteen UDTs or Underwater Demolition Teams operated by our Service under three different Commanders: First Lieutenant James Tatum (1941-1945), Second Lieutenant John Fenton (1945-1948) and Commander Harry Averill Whitehead(1948-1950). During peacetime we made steady progress in increasing numbers through promotions within our ranks but unfortunately during World War II we lost many qualified Officers & Men due to combat assignments overseas or forced retirement due to ill health etc etc….. However thru all this hard times we have managed to keep up with other Departments within our State & Nation…. Our motto today is “For God And Country”

Escondido, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. It is the largest city in San Diego County by population and the second-largest city in Southern California after Los Angeles. The City of Escondido was founded on December 8, 1853 by Mormon pioneers from Utah. The name "Escondido" means "hidden hill." Over time, its boundaries became more specific to include much of today's Riverside County and even parts of Orange County. The first post office opened in Escondido on July 14, 1857. At that time it was known as Cedarville until it changed its name to Escondido on November 17, 1860 due to the influence of then-Mayor George Prentice Hill. On January 15, 1862 Mayor Hill recommended that the town be named "Escondido" with Controller William Blythe as the first commissioner to adopt this recommendation. After some debate and two public hearings both chambers passed legislation approving the name change unanimously on February 7th; Delegate James Waddell voted against but his motion was overruled by Speaker Josephine Hughes who stated her belief that it should be called Cedar Valley because that is where most of its agricultural production took place at the time (Cedar Valley Agricultural Association Minutes). On October 20th 1861 Mayor Hill recommended that a post office be established at what would become present day downtown Escondidos location due to increasing business traffic caused by gold discoveries at Sinaloa and Comox Valleys. The first post office opened at 4th and Vine Streets under the name Oficina del Oro on November 10th 1861 with Waddell serving as Postmaster until he resigned effective December 3rd 1865 due to health concerns related to an unknown mineral deposit near Bywater Gulch which he claimed discovery had found during his explorations there three years earlier (Mormon Pioneer History website). In 1863 new Commissioners were appointed including one from Forstman & Folsom who served until 1865 when they were replaced by former mayor Hill himself along with JnoPrenticeHill who served for six years making him sole Commissioner from 1865-1874 before retiring effective April 1st 1876 having fulfilled all requirements for service including being married into a Mormon family (City Council resolution adopted February 7th 1865). Heinrich August Schrader served as acting Commissioner from 1876-1877 while another former mayor Ira Hinkle filled out parttime duty until May 5th 1886 when he retired effective September 1st 1886 due to ill health also resulting in his wife taking over management role; she remained acting commissioner until their death within eight months later. silvia lopez became Acting Commissioner upon Hinkle’s death leaving office on October 1st 1886 following a term of only five days due to illness not long after becoming Acting Commissioner (City Council resolution adopted February 7th 1865). In 1905 local pioneer Asahel Woodruff donated land northeast of downtown for use as a municipally owned park which included future home fields like Grand Park and Vista Park now used for other purposes such as shopping malls or housing developments beyond what has been seen here before such as Mission Hills Polo Fields which are now open space . In 1912 water supplies were diverted south off University Boulevard into town creating Arenal Lake which continues Today's Water Supply System operation thanks largely to Measure HH -A bond issue approved by voters in 1984 - providing significant financial benefits for our community still ongoing today (City Charter Amendment No 2 passed November 6teenth 1990) . The original growth and development of Escondido came about gradually over many years through annexation ordinance changes followed by voter referenda allowing various businesses or properties annexed/added into the city limits without any vote or process other than simply putting property values up on a ballot – something unheard of anymore within our lifetime! This process started slowly back when we only had around 50 residents living inside city limits dating back prior thereto! With so many area expansions going onto since then we’ve managed turn things around big time! Our current population topes out at approximately 115K people currently residing inside municipal boundaries making us one of Southern California’s fastest growing cities! Our entrepreneurship rate ranks third nationally behind LAX and Orange county CVAs according To 2010 census data released by USCIS just recently (. . . .) We have continued experiencing rapid growth throughout recent decades despite some challenging times throughout our history such as both earthquakes hit our area causing extensive damage however those have definitely not stopped our momentum forward ever since!
The Coast Guard has been providing protection and assistance to the people of our Nation for centuries. The Coast Guard was founded on April 16, 1790 as the United States Custom House Guards. The first CG was Captain Nicholas Biddle and his men who patrolled New York Harbor. In 1817, CG James Kapp organized a coast guard force from vessels in Long Island Sound to protect shipping entering or exiting New York Harbor. In 1898, President Grover Cleveland established the Coast Guard Reserve as part of a larger effort to modernize the government. This reserve service provided law enforcement and security for coastal communities. As more and more Americans moved inland, it became necessary for the Coast Guard to provide an effective response to inland emergencies such as hurricanes and earthquakes. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has played an important role in American society by protecting our coastline, maritime interests,and public safety at all times while ensuring that our citizens have access to essential services during these difficult times.

Escondido, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 141,365 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after Tijuana and it is also one of only two cities in the county with a population over 100,000. The first permanent residents of Escondido were Hugh Glass and his family who arrived near what is now downtown Escondido on September 3rd, 1849. The town was named for John Sutter’s Rancho Cucamonga which lay to the south of present-day Escondido. Mr. Glass contributed land to form what would become the nucleus of today’s city limits on December 15th, 1887 when he sold part of his rancho called Rancho Santa Fe to Wm J Callaghan and James Hutton for $200 per acre (or $6 acres per mile). The first post office opened in Escondido on January 17th, 1888 under the name Indian Wells. In 1902 City Engineer Oscar Morse designated portion of east end as an open space area adjacent to Town Hall square where citizens could picnic or watch baseball games without fear of being picked off by developers working on larger projects nearby. In 1912 work began on what would become known as North Park Boulevard which connected Escondido with Mission Hills through Oriental Avenue and then continued north along Mission Valley Boulevard until it reached present day State Route 66 just west of Interstate 805 approximately one mile north from Town Hall Square. North Park Boulevard was renamed University Avenue in 1936 after Scripps Institution Of Oceanography graduate Driscoll Beecher “Driscoll” Whitehead who had been an early donor to the city and served as its mayor from 1923-1936 and again from 1944-1948 inclusive becoming its first female mayor when she succeeded Mayor Samuel Goldwyn characterizing it as her “last great issue” during her four years tenure prior to her death at age 85 following a long illness that year.
