The Dutch started brewing their own coffee from dried beans in 1653. A new kind of coffee was developed by monks at an Italian monastery called Montelusa near Rome in 1795. In 1837 Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed a drinking machine called a Kobo that allowed people to enjoy fresh roasted coffee without having to go through the trouble of grinding it themselves. The first commercial roasting shops opened in New York City in 1851 and Boston soon followed suit. By 1912 over 100 different types of roasted coffees had been developed worldwide!

Escondido is a city in the San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 27,534 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California and has been called "the Gateway to the South" because it leads to downtown San Diego. The name Escondido comes from Spanish meaning "hidden." The first European settlement in what is now Escondido was built by Manuel Nieto on Rancho Encinco de las Palmas in 1821 as part of a land grant to José Maria Osuna. After Mexico's independence from Spain, Mexican citizens began arriving and developing this area which became known as los Olivos (the olives). By 1835 there were 10 businesses operating inEscondido employing 300 people including 20 teachers and 50 farmers. A post office opened in 1836, and by 1840 there were 12 stores and 100 residents. In 1850 Josefina Valenzuela married Antonio Giannini who owned Rancho Santa Margarita al Norte; Giannini donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of Escondido for a public school district that would later become Escondido Unified School District.On July 14th 1860 voters approved an act creating the City of Escondido with a population of 350 inhabitants; it was incorporated on November 3rd 1861 under the name "Encinitas". During World War II millions of dollars were sent to Japan through escrow accounts at various banks situated throughout Southern California; these funds helped finance not only war-related expenses but also such civilian items as food production and housing
