Escondido is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 209,635 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–San Francisco–Oakland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Escondido was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on November 14, 1769. Heading up the Pacific coast from Baja California he sighted and named what would become Escondido Point on December 8 of that year. Mission San Diego de Asís (founded in 1776) along with Mission Concepcion were two of many Missions built by the Franciscan order between 1769 and 1821 throughout California. The native people who lived here at the time were known as "the Padres" or "Pioneers." In 1853, during Mexican rule over California, five Anglo-American businessmen organized a group called "The Pioneer Club" to start an agricultural colony near Mount Wilson in Inyo County because they believed that it would be easier for them to get food supplies into Mexico if they could control the land themselves. The group's name came from one of their leaders: George Hearst had started Rancho Agua Dulce in 1848 but sold it back to his original investors two years earlier. They began planting crops and building homes near Mineral Wells before finally founding a town on October 10,1854 - only one day after Don Hernando Cisneros became governor of Mexico City following its creation as part of Veracruz state when California became a US territory on January 12, 1850). Escondido's growth was slow due to lack of natural resources and competition from nearby towns such as Vista and Laguna Beach which had larger populations and more developed infrastructure. However, when water shortages led to increased construction around 1962-1964 in response to Escondido becoming known for its booming tourism industry (due largely to Off-Road Vehicle use), development picked up again with new subdivisions being added including much needed housing near Interstate 15/SR-16 interchange which helped bring about 5% growth per year until recent times when there has been no significant increase in population or job opportunities despite several rounds of annexation attempts by various municipalities within SD County since 2000s The area now bounded by I15 southbound Exit 2 (Hemet Road), SR-16 eastbound Exit 1A (Alvarado Street), Empire Boulevard northbound exit #1B (Fiesta Parkway), Villa Park Drive eastbound exit #2A (Alvarado Street) & Northern Avenue westbound exit #3A (Winchester Avenue) once used by Horsehoe Farms & later Alvarado Water Treatment Plant—was annexed by Escondidoland municipality on December 3rd 1990 under provisions included in Proposed Official Plan Amendment No 11191 filed with SD Planning Department; however this annexation did not take effect until February 25th 1992 after objectors brought suit againstcity claiming violation of Municipal charters granted pursuant thereto In light thereof Mayor Carlile issued Order No 9 dated February 25th 1992 designating certain blocks within boundaries hereinbefore specified as “New Town Boundaries” effective immediately; all other blocks remaining within boundaries hereinbefore specified are still subjectto said ordinances dating back prior thereto . .
