Escondido is a city in California, United States. The population was 17,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern coast of San Diego County and lies about 26 miles (41 km) north of downtown San Diego. The first Europeans to visit Escondido were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their exploration of the area in 1542. In 1824, Mexican land grantee Manuel Nieto built a small resort here, which became known as Rancho Niño de la Vega. A year later, Escondido residents voted to become an incorporated town under the name of Escondidoskee Village. In 1907, work began on building what would become the first civic center in Escondido when parts of streets leading to it were widened and resurfaced with new gravel and concrete. The cornerstone for this $2 million project was laid by Mayor Goldie Burtrawick on November 3 that same year. The new civic center was designed by architect Alfred Jarry and cost $10 million to build including funds provided by wealthy businessmen James Irvine and Hiram Sutter who donated land for it. In 1915, Escondido welcomed its first post office when it opened at 9th Street & Ave Maria Avenue; ZIP Code 92022 at that time being only a number without letters until 1923 when it became 80000 . On December 12, 1920 local merchant Harry Prentice donated a large tract of land east of State Route 163 which served as the nucleus for what would become much larger Prentice Park which includes many restaurants today along with golf courses.. Aerial photos from 1935-1939 show significant progress being made towards creating a bypass around Downtown San Diego so development could continue southward instead of westward like originally planned; this bypass became reality through excavation started in 1939 but stopped due to World War II however much remains unchanged such as original freeway/road signage etc.. Escondido, California is a city located in Imperial County, California. The population was 83,026 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Diego County and second most populous city in Orange County. Escondido is also one of four cities with a population of over 100,000 within the county. The other three are San Diego, Riverside, and Long Beach. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Escondido were Missionaries Father Francisco Xavier Alvarez and Father José de Alcalá who landed on shore near Point Conception on October 29th 1769. They named their settlement La Paloma (the Olive Tree). In 1821 Juan Bautista Aguilar founded Rancho Rinconada which became part of Rancho Santa Ana del Golfo Mexican land grant given to him by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. On February 14th 1835 Agustín Carrillo y Pavón granted Rancho Rinconada to José Joaquín Lerdo y Gómez as part of his deed for Rancho Ventura del Rey from Gabriel García Márquez Sr.. In 1838 Manuel Nieto purchased part of Sanchez Place from Amalia Sánchez for $4,000s plus interest and started building the first adobe house that would become known as Villa Nueva (New Villa). In 1840 Victoriano Huerta bought parts of Villa Nueva from Nicolás de Portolà for $10,000s plus interest which made it into what is today known as Old Town Escondido. On November 15th 1850 voters approved annexation by San Diego County when they passed an election pamphlet “Annexation Proclamation” which read: “Whereas under legal authority it has been proposed by act or proclamation of the superior authorities heretofore issued that this COUNTY should be annexed to SAN DIEGO COUNTY; Now we ask you if you will ratify this proposal?” Later that year on December 7th 1850 Mayor Manuel Moreno convened a meeting at City Hall to discuss addition plans with supervisors Lorenzo Mata and Ignacio Seguin who were also proponents for annexing Escondido into San Diego County. After hearing all sides there was no decided answer until after Christmas when members met again with Silva about annexing onto his ranch but he declined because he already had two towns within his jurisdiction- Encinitas and Carlsbad- neither of which were annexed into San Diego County at that time! Municipal president Obregon then called another meeting where all interested parties attended including Silva and talked about annexing Escondidos but no decisions were made until January 3rd 1851 when Obregon sent letters to all mayors requesting their opinion on Annexing/AddingEscondidoToSanDiegoCounty desires some clarification may be desired about certain points being raised thereby postponing any decision until further notice’ . After much deliberation only Moreno voted against annexation but Silva still opposed it citing lack of clarity surrounding certain issues however after further discussion both men agreed to accept annexation without further objection from either party

The first white people to arrive in Escondido were MissionariesBernardos who arrived on July 24, 1775 from Monterey Peninsula. They named their communitySan Miguel de Escondido after St. Michaels Cathedral in Manila where they had been ordained as missionaries just two years earlier. The first post office was established in 1857 and it changed its name to Escondido on October 1, 1868 because it was closer to then what the town had become known as: "the backwater of society". Eldridge Young became mayor of Escondidoland served from 1904-1909 and 1913-1920; he also served as sheriff for three terms running until his death on January 3, 1924; during his term as mayor he erected many municipal buildings including City Hall (1893), jail (1902), library (1904), fire department (1907), watertower (1910) and public Works Department Building now part of City Hall Annex. On December 4th 1907 voters passed an ordinance creating a school district which included Eondo Park southward to present day Eastshore Drive which bordered Encinitas County before that county was dissolved into Imperial County in 1914 when that county was merged with San Diego County On November 10 1922 voters passed an ordinance establishing an Agricultural District within the School District which included parcels now bounded by Castle Boulevard/Eastshore Drive/Naval Air Station Midway Road eastward to present day I-5/State Route 66 In 1930 voters approved annexation by adjacent Imperial County makingEscondidoland both a city and county seat like most other cities and counties in southern California prior to statehood in 1959. The population peaked at 100,000 around 1940 however quickly decreased due numerous World War II military barracks being constructed along I-5 near campus beginning shortly after Pearl Harbor brought hostilities close to home After World War II ended all but a few thousand residents left for various reasons such as jobs or suburbanization while most continued living locally until the early 1970s when more recent construction began surrounding campus
