Marines have been deployed in many different places around the world for years now, but there is one place where they have always been a part of the community and that is Escondido, California. The city has been home to Marines since World War II and has even hosted Marine Academy classes. In recent years, Escondido has become known as the “ Gifts Capital of the World” because of all the gifts that are sent back and forth between Marines and civilians. His gift was made out of love and care for his fellow Marines, and it shows in his heart-wrenching note attached to it: Dear Friends & Family of my unit – I am so sorry for how things ended last night! Words cannot express how much I loved spending time with you all – especially those who were not able to see me during this deployment (I know you miss me…)but I had to leave before dark due to an illness. One of the most famous Marines in history is World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient, George E. Smith. Smith was a Sgt. 1st Class who served as a team commander with the Third Battalion, Seventh Marines during World War II. He later became an instructor at the Marine Infantry School in Quantico, Virginia before his death in 1951 at age 49. Smith's heroism and selflessness are highly respected by Marines and civilians alike, and his legacy continues to be cherished today. In honor of Smith's memory, here are five examples of Marines deploying gift history: 1) The First Battalion, Sixth Marines donated a toy gun to Iraqi children after invading their country in 2003; this gesture helped improve relationships between Iraqis and American troops. 2) The Second Lieutenant General Harry S Truman Awarded medals to more than 200 marine officers for their heroism during World War II; these awards reflect credit for great actions that took place during combat while serving with the Marine Corps. 3) A group of marines from Company H (4th Battalion, Fifth Marines) Deployed Giving/Giving Back Day on November 17th 1984 gave backpacks filled with clothes, school supplies, bicycles and other items to local charities throughout California; this event was intended as a way to show support for local community organizations that were struggling during the early 1980s recession. 4) An infantry battalion from Camp Pendleton donated three tents sporting different United States flagthemed designs to help homeless veterans receive shelter while they awaited treatment or housing options; this gesture also demonstrated support for military veterans through donations which would typically go towards housing instead of welfare programs statewide. 5) The First Regiment (7th Marine Regiment), based out of Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station donated 12 golf carts complete with clubs- each cart carrying up to 18 rounds-to help soldiers stationed at Kaneohe Bay stay activeduring wartime deployments outside Hawaii!
