Escondido, California is located in the southern Behavioral Research Unit of Los Angeles County. It is a city of over 150,000 people that was founded in 1909 by two brothers and their father. The area that would become Escondido was long inhabited by the Tongva Native Americans. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 8, 1542. He named it San Diego de los Padres after his patron saint. In 1909, two brothers from Mission Viejo established a farmstead east of present-day Escondido and called it Rancho Santa Margarita. In 1912, when they sold the land to ranchers Harry Bancroft and Eugene Vail for $2 per acre ($250 per acre at current prices), they decided to name their new town Escondido after one of their holdings in San Diego County. The original town site included only a few homes and an outhouse. By 1920, however, there were over 200 people living in Escondido proper with another 500 or so scattered throughout its various remote hamlets and villages. A primary cause for the rapid growth of Escondido during these years was its location as an agricultural center due to its fertile meadowlands and stream valleys which supported large cattle herds; as well as its access to water supplies through wells dug into hillsides nearby. By 1930, the population had reached 2,500 residents and businesses had been built along both streets – Douglas Street being particularly thriving with several banks (Fidelity National Bank building now home to pricey real estate firm Cullen & Cromwell) as well as movie theaters (the Regal Cinema still stands today across from City Hall), department stores (Jardine's Department Store), churches (Anglican Catholic Cathedral) and other civic institutions such as schools (Will Rogers Senior High School). It’s not clear how many people lived in Escondida during World War II since almost all records pertaining to it have gone missing; but according to oralhistory researcher Donny Shults “the majority”of households living within minutes walking distance of Navy Base/ Naval Air Station Willow Beach reported registering for military services between 1941-1945 inclusive).
