Navy gift history in Escondido, California began with the establishment of Naval Air Station San Diego ( NASDAQ:SAN) in 1942. In 1946, NAS Escondido was redesignated as Naval Air Station El Centro. The first Navy ship to be stationed at NAS El Centro was the torpedo bomber USS Lexington (CV-2), which arrived on October 1, 1946. In 1949, NAS ESCONDIDO became home to Carrier Strike Group 3 and participated in operations in the Korean War. From 1951-1953, NAS ESCONDIDO supported Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to drive North Koreans out of South Korea. After the war ended,NAS ESCONDIDO served as an air station for reserve aviation units until it was decommissioned on May 14th 1953. On that date, NASEscondido became a municipally owned airport under the name “Eldershot Municipal Airport”. On November 1st 1969, NAVY OF THE CALIFORNIA LANDING CAMP had its official opening at Eldershot Municipal Airport when Commodore John Doolittle brought his new F4U Corsair squadron from RAF Mildenhall England for a six-month deployment aboard HMCS Esquimalt (CV-3). Between 1969 and 1972 CV-3 operatedwx carrier qualifications detachment from USS Coral Sea (LHD 9) while dutying off Okinawa during Japan Boycott campaign and also served as escort carrier during Vietnam deployments Phnom Penh and Cam Ranh Bay area both times - operation "Yankee Eagle". CV-3 returned to Pearl Harbor after Johnson's visit on February 15th 1972 after participating in Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony & return voyage of USS Enterprise (CVN 68). After Vang Vieng incident occurred involving MV Prince Of Wales bound for Australia with Vietnamese refugees on board MV Canberra she was diverted via Midway Atoll to Yokosuka Naval Base where she arrived September 8th 1970 under command of Rear Admiral Thomas J Boyd who relieved Admiral Harry S Vandenberg Jr.. She remained there until December 5th when she sailed back whence Midway Atoll undeployed again till January 21st 1971 when she collided with HMS Hermes off Guam - only one killed & all passengers survived including Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser however no charges were filed against anyone!
